The original design pump was a triple section gear type (three pumps stacked together as one). One section for the 3pt and remote outlets.....one for power steering AND Power Director (hand clutch) and if equipped, the hydraulic PTO clutch. The last and smallest section was for the Traction Booster weight transfer system that worked thru the 3pt hitch arms only. Performance was very good even at low engine speeds because each pump was independent. Downside was lots of probable places to leak/seep oil in-between each section and I would imagine cost of production. The later design was one large gear pump section (with a flow divider) and the smaller Traction Booster pump section. These worked well but usually required a little more throttle to get the hitch or remotes to lift a load from idle. Notice both pumps always kept the Traction Booster idependent so nothing else affected it's output. The original triple pump design also (in my opinion) was to try and combat the John Deere 4010 closed center hydraulic system design propaganda that had been going on since 1961.

Early pump had a manifold bolted to back with flowdivider and PS relief valve in it. The later had the PS relief valve and flowdivider made in it.
As far as to which is best, which ever is on your tractor is the one you about have to use. Could use later on older tractor but would take some pluming and different mounting housing on front of pump.   MACK

The early pump did not have a flow divider. It was a 3 section pump like Dr Allis stated. The flow divider on the later is on the back of the pump along with the ps releif.
The biggest problem with the later pump is the flow divider not working.
