Has anyone on this forum attempted to use a Char-Lynn torque generator along with the existing tractor hydraulics for power steering? I am aware of how the WD and the wd45 hydraulics operate and the pressures involved. I see where the latest Steiner catalog lists a "power steering priority flow control valve" which will operate under pressures which can be adjusted. The valve is set to operate at 1500 PSI from the factory but can be adjusted to other applications. I am thinking that this combination would work as long as the foot clutch is engaged on the WD and the 45 and would work even better on any total live power machines.
Any thoughts on this? |

Gil; I am very pleased with the live charlyn power steering that Jack (KY) recently added to my D-14. The power steering pump (and oil reservoir from a Datsun pickup) is driven by a second V-belt pulley secured to the origional crankshaft pulley that drives the generator (12V). Jack also added a female spline to this "two pulley crankshaft assembly" and fabricated a 16" long shaft with male spline on one end and 2-bolt butterfly on other end for bolting to the hydraulic pump mounted on the loader. This 16" long shaft assembly slips into position prior to installing the loader and thus provides live hdraulics for the loader. It is removed with one hand after removing the loader.
This post does not address your question, perhaps I should have created a new topic in describing my D-14's hydraulics,

New generation JD tractors use the main hydraulic pump for power steering, power brakes, and a hydraulic differential lock. But their main pump is rated at 20 to 24 gpm depending on the model and vintage. Is it not true that the WD pump is only rated at 3 or 4 gpm so there might not be enough flow to run the power steering and do any other work.

I have nice small PS pump out of Isuzu truck that would be ideal for pressure to torque gen. I am looking into pulling steering box apart also to see if it is adaptable to actually becoming the torque gen also. Anyone want to take the parts for messing with?

The WD hydraulics does not have enough flow to operate the power steering. There would be nothing left for the lift.

the hydralics on a WD/WD45 are closed center, Im sure the Char-Lynn torque generator is an open center valve. I dont think it will work very well if at all. HTH

what would happen if a guy would pull, the steering system out of a old combine and use it in place of a manaul steering system. Have a Ford 400 with loader, that has a bad steering box. thought I could use the tractors hydroulic system to power it
