THIS IS NEAT! There is some things I never knew about trains. I never knew that they had "black boxes" that gives a report on how the performance of the engine is. Just wanted to share this.

Cool video.
I would think that chart recorders were a late addition to these old monsters? Never knew they were used at all though.

I have always loved trains and the steamers most of all. They cannot be matched by the diesel locomotives in toughness and beauty.
This will put us on topic and let me show my favorite picture of all. A combination of my two interests. ![]() Edited by AllisChalmers37 - 21 Oct 2011 at 7:03pm |

At 4:33 in to this he talks about the injector. I used to machine those things in a number 7 J&L turret lather when I worked for Penberthy. A real Pitha to make one that worked. The prints had dates from back in the late 1800's.

the other video on the site the Army Moves is also good , It doesn't mention name abut Eisenhower was in command of that cross country move . The Interstate Highway system was a direct result of the Defense dept requirement to move troops coast to coast .

The neat part is that the locomotive in the picture has been cleared for another 15 years of running the rails as soon as they do a mild overhaul to it. I wonder if another load of AC's could be in the future.

I just thought of the NEATEST idea ever! I am sure some MAJOR strings would have to be pulled. What if for the 100 aniversay of AC tracors...At the West Allis Works some of the original rail lines still run next the old factory. How cool would it be to have a steamer or any engine pull up next the the factory with loaded tractors that AC made in Chronological order. Or even just a few tractors from each era of production! :D THAT.WOULD.BE.EPIC

Isn't that a rather recently taken photo? And those tractors belong to some one on this site?

I still think we could go back to steam using compressed natural gas and save using imported oil .

Awesome post. I never knew that some locomotives used a scoop to pick up water from troughs between the rails while in motion. Amazing stuff.
Thanks for posting. |
