I am working on a 3510 gehl skid steer. I know it not AC , but I think I can still get some answers. I had the engine out to do some work to it. I also had the distributer out. I did not trust myself putting it back in so a buddy of mine did it. I went to start it and I could tell something was not right it went POW PAN BOOM. So I reset it now it starts but as soon as you let go of the key it quits. I tried advancing it retarding it. It still does it. If you keep cranking it, it will even get the rpm up, then take your hand off the key, done. Any thoughts? Thanks Eric |

I would bet that a wire got hooked up wrong some where. Sounds like the same wire that excites the solenoid is your hot wire to the coil. I would take a jumper wire and go from the coil directly to the battery and see what happens then.

don't know about yours but some engines don't really have 12 volt coils and only use the full 12 volts with the ign. in start as soon as you let the key off it goes through a resister to cut the voltage down and in your case turns it off. So if it runs with the wire to the battery then you know thats the problem but you may burn the coil up if you keep running on 12 volts. so you need to find the right wires.

What post on the coil do i put it on? Put it on positive to positive? I put a new coil on it maybe I have to switch the wires around? The old one had no markings on it. The new one has a plus and minus on it. I never looked at a coil so long in my life so I gessed at it. |

The point kept burning out on it so I got a coil with a internal resister. Is that a problom?

the resister is not the problem a 12 volt will be stronger and have a stronger spark but if it runs it runs. your problem most likely is in the wires from the key switch you, have power to the coil with it in start position but not when it goes to run. trace your wires you will find it. I can't remember exactly but i would put the + to the battery side and - to the dist. this is not a big problem and will run either way but the spark jumps the other way when hooked up wrong. Someone else can confirm this for me.

the points burn mostly do to condenser problems or key left on with the points in the wrong position for long periods. like listening to the radio in your car with the key on but motor not running. Has nothing to do with the coil you use.
