    Posted: 30 Jun 2011 at 5:35pm

First off, let me tell you that I am a parts guy myself and I understand that everybody has bad days behind the counter, but this morning I had on of the most insulting parts experiences ever buying parts at a local old A-C now AGCO mostly New Holland dealer.  I needed a couple of false ring hopper bottoms that were cracked on the A-C planter I'm working on and after checking the dealer locator at work I found out this dealership had some on hand.  I called yesterday to make sure that they had them there.  This morning I drove up there to pick them up.  The two parts were on the counter when I got there.  While there, I stood at the counter for close to ten minutes before anybody would even notice me.  One guy was on the phone, three others, who I don't know what their job titles were when you stand behind the counter, just stood there.  Finally after ten minutes I said to the one guy just standing there that these are my parts here and he told me that one of the other guys would help me.  After another few minutes a more dressed up guy came out, who I think might have been the owner, seen me standing there waiting and asked me what I was working on.  I told him, and he said something like "great" and walked off.  A few more minutes passed and the one guy was still on the phone and another guy showed up from the back finally and asked me if he could help me.  I told him that these are my parts here on the counter.  He went to ring me up and then asked if there was anything else that I needed.  While waiting I had spotted an old A-C box on one of the shelves behind the counter and I asked him if that was for sale, he said no that it was just storage for some castle nuts.  I said okay and I told him if it was a old part that I would be interested in buying it.  He then told me that he had some old stuff upstairs and I asked if I could go up and look at what he had.  He then replied in a raised voice insulting manner, "If you think that you're gonna buy that stuff for fifty cents a piece or something I'm not gonna waste my time!!!"  I think I took one step back in shock and replied "Okay" with my head down somewhat.  I never gave this guy any indication that I wanted to buy this stuff under list price and I was willing to pay full price for a few items for my shelves at home.  He continued to total up my parts, and by that time he could tell that he had insulted me and that he had made my visit to his dealership a memorable one.  He told me my total for my two parts was fifty one dollars and some odd cents.  I had just cashed my pay check at the bank earlier in the morning and got three hundered dollars worth in fifty dollar bills to spend on booze and fireworks for the upcoming weekend.  When he told me the total, I dropped two fifties on the counter and he asked me if I had a dollar instead, I opened my wallet to show him and told him that the smallest bill I got right now is a fifty.  He then acted like he was doing me a favor by shaving a few cents on the parts to get the total under fifty bucks.  I think he was just doing it cause he was to lazy to count change or didn't have enough change to break a fifty.  He then started to make small talk about old A-C planters and other A-C stuff in a effort to repair the damage he had done and I replied with yes and no and other one or two word answers.  He got my change for me and told me if I wanted to go upstairs I was welcome too.  I took half a step to the right to come around the counter and thought to myself I don't care what's upstairs I don't need it that bad and told him no that's okay.  He replied with "maybe next time huh?"  I said yeah and walked out thinking if I had just treated a customer like that at our dealership I would be out of a job.

Matt, I have had the same issues at some different parts places also. But I run into it even more at shipping and recieving docks. Sometimes I think I am invisible.

Being that 10% of the people that can and want to work are out of a job, I don't see why 50% of the people working don't put a little bit more into their work. I see stuff like that all the time in any type of service industry.

Wow, sounds like a first class bozo.

I work in an office, and occasionally help people out in the lobby area that come in to see other people. Usually a couple questions are asked, first, "are you being helped?" second, "I will see if they are available at this time", and third, " please call this extention."
Not much of an effort to help someone out, and I aint even supposed to, im in the eng. dept.
Sorry about their poor service. On the flip side, I went to my local AGCO dealer and bought 4 plow bolts. Walked outta there with $2 bucks less in my pocket, and laughin from the BS we were talkin about at the parts counter. Totally different than your experience.
Go figure.

The problem is, you being there, causes someone to have to do MORE work. I see that alot. You interupted that guy from probably just returning from lunch, and he was planning on sitting around for a while daydreaming about getting tutored on being about to give change for a $50.00 bill. Who cares that he would actually be making the company more money, therefore helping it stay in business during these rough times, therefore making sure he still has a job.

I seen that attitude/type of service too!

Boy that sounds like a common thing,  Your just a small farmer what do we need you for!!!  I get that feeling allot an have in my short time seen two of them go under.  Do that enough time and you pay with you business.   Sound like Whitmer's  Farm Equipment in Ohio ,  I truly hate to give them any business.  Now there Feed Store I love going there tops and try to help you out any way they can.  Best thing to do is name names and tell basic simple story.   Bad thing is they had what you needed, some time you have to Bit The Bullet, just make no scene to me how and why they do this. How dump are they !!!!!!!  Oldoug  try to have a Great day  , it is also dis-hearting (sp)

Usually when this happens to me I take my business elsewhere, never to return.  I see this often and it really pisses me off.  It's easy for me to get on a roll with this stuff...and I'm sure In my mind I could relate your experience to the leadership of this country providing terrible service to the taxpayer...but today I'm gonna be positive.
Yesterday I got two tires at Discount tire, showed up 15 minutes before the appointment, they had me out the door one minute after the appointment time, mounted, balanced, no grease on the steering wheel!  It was the best tire buying experience I have had in 40 yrs.  and it renewed my faith that there are still some good people providing service!

Matt - since they appeared to answer your calls before you visited them and priority was given to answering the phone, you should have pulled your cell phone out while standing at the counter and called them to get waited on.  Mike

It sounds like the owner or manager is part of the problem. Attitude starts at the top, and it sounds like everyone is pretty slack.
Think for yourself and be your own expert. Be willing to change your mind; however, willingness to change your mind doesn’t mean that you will. Blindly following any path is the pinnacle of insanity.

This story makes me appreciate our local Agco dealer. It does not matter how long it takes to  track down parts for my old AC tractors they are as accomodating as can be. The ownership is a farm family and it shows.

But why do we accept this type of behavior or treatment? Aren't we just as important as this person behind the counter? You can express your displeasure without raising your voice or using bad language. Sometimes very simple ways make the most impressions.

I can never understand dealerships like that! If you are having a bad day, fine, we all have them, go home or find something that is not customer oriented. There is a semi-local dealership which can never seem to keep there head out of their rears, after calling to make sure parts are there, driveing 30 miles one way, and finding that my parts are not there...take that dealership off my list. The other dealership, inflates their part prices, and act like I am small potatoes. True, I am small potatoes now, but that could change one day, and their attitude towards me will be remembered. All dealerships charged me for shipping! Now what do I do...call Sandy Lake. Never have to leave the office or house, and parts are correct and delivered. Plus the parts staff actually knows what I am talking about, and they never seem to have a bad day. They will even hurry to make sure my parts are shipped the same day!

When I was negotiating a Union Contract I had found a article that listed 5 reasons a business failed .. I wish I could remember where I found that article as it fits well. I had both the Company and Union listening as I read the 5 reasons given, and both asked and got a copy of article.
 APATHY was the #1 reason
indifference to the customers need , the taking a customer as a interference to the way they do business.
somehow as looking at a customer not as the reason to be in business but a evil that has to be put up with in the business to make a profit to stay in business. Somehow the idea of customer service in supplying the needs of the customer are lost.

Ya I love going into a place and getting treated like crap to spent money. Last winter I was at a newer dealership inquiring about a tractor. The guy selling I have known for years and we were chatting about the tractor and his manager came over and said you have a call about something guy is out of the country  blah blah blah. So in short his manager said that he was sorry but this was important and I said ok and left. I am back to buying my Farmall parts on line, don't need the aggravation, and obviously they don't need to sell me anything because I am nothing to them.  Why I like going to SLI 3 miles from the house, known them for years, I get to torment the help, always a pleasure to go there.
I have a 185 Allis, 6060 Allis, Model K gleaner, SMTA ferg 35, ferg 20 (paps first tractor, Allis B (wife's)John Deere 240 skid loader and a bunch of the usual farm stuff.

Yes I have to give it to Sandy Lake too , just they are a good drive to get to. But They are A nice group of people, nice  Dealership.  About 25 years ago we had 3 nice AC dealers in this area, one was too old and going out of business, the other was older too an past away and the new owner just not the same.

Good point! I insist on good service. I have left many items on the counter and left with a smile and  a, "I am going to buy it from someone who wants my business."

I know exactly what you mean. I like our local agco dealer, hes a nice guy. But its like the parts guy doesnt care wether yoyu shop there or not. They have a mechanic there who sometimes doubles on the parts counter. whenever hes there  he is freindly and helpful and I always seem to spend more. when the normal parts guy is on the counter ..more often then not Im turned away to go somewhere else. parts are parts.. and if we needem we;re gonna buyem. one place or another. youd thing a buisness would want to be the one we go to.
Ive been thinking of risking the freindship of the owner by sugesting he get a new parts guy. Id bet hes loosing a lot of busness and money because of him.

I've had that experience too.  They get the attitude that you aren't worth their time or effort, and they have absolutely no concept that the return customer is the best customer, and the most powerful advertising simply cannot be bought... it is the referral given... or not given.

From an economic analysis standpoint, A parts counter is an incredibly simple thing... it is a flat surface where a customer stands on one side, and employees on the other... goods and services come from one side, and go to the other... money travels in the opposite direction.  The amount of economic benefit yielded, is a result of the quality and quantity of exchange (gross product) that occurs at the highest rate, for the longest period of time (monetary velocity and duration)

Anyone who cannot understand that, has no business being in business, has no business having a parts counter, nor has any business putting people on the BACK side of that counter.  Fortunately, economic Darwinism USUALLY prevails, because the cost of stupidity is usually substantially higher than the profit margin of zero sales.

My company doesn't have a parts counter... matter of fact, the way our business works, we rarely do any sort of transaction where we see our customers... because the direct customer contact is handled by others... but when a guy sees my company shirt, and comes up to ask a question, or even joke around, we do it.  We're human, and dedicated.  We are what we do.

Well I see things from both sides of the fence, but I do challenge you to go just a tiny step further.  Since I own my own business, and if I had an employee treat somone like that, I would want to know.  Many times, I've alled or stopped back in after treatment like that and been thanked nby the owner/manager for letting them know.  A manager/owner should be aware of things, but sometimes they are not.  If you get the same attitude from the higher-ups, broadcast the incident with honesty as load as you can.  If things are different, then let others know that you had a bad experience, but was treated right in the end.
