I have a reduced effort steering gear in a wd that I do not care for. It makes the tractor handle like a boat. A member of my local tractor club wants the gear and I do not. He wants to trade me even up my reduced effort gears for his standard gears but he claims that we could just change the worm gear on the steering shaft and not the gear on top of the shaft that runs through the pedestal to the wheels, but this makes no sense to me since the gears tooth count and pitch would have to be different. I guess I want to know if this is a fair trade and if he is right that we can just change the worm gear.
Thanks,
Denis

My great uncle always claimed that you can just switch the worm gear. He liked the reduced effort gear as it wouldn't allow the steering wheel to jerk out of your hand and rap your knuckles when you hit a bump. He had a couple gears pulled out of his junk tractors but both went to scrap by mistake after he died.

I heard they were for tractors with cultivators back before power steering. They take about twice as many turns to makes the front wheels turn and if you try to go any faster than 1st gear you can't keep up with it to turn at the end of a row.

You have to change the worm and sector together. They are matched and probably would bind if not replaced together. I had two pedastals apart at the same time a year ago and the difference is obvious.

Thats what I thought and I assume the sector gear is pressed on to the pedestal shaft.
