How much weight does it take up front if you carry 1700lb round bales on the 3 point? I know if you have a 500 series loader on that does the trick. Any advise is apprieciated.

I have 200 lbs on my D-17 holds it down just fine.  If you have a good bale fork and make sure the bale is all the way on you should be just fine with no weight.

I'm with Tex, you should be OK with none but a few weights on the front would help things.

I think you might be better off with about 700 lbs up front unless you don't have any hills to go up. I need 750# in suitcase weights plus CaCl in the 9.5L-15's to keep the front end down on my 175D and the JD MX8 mower. The mower weighs right around 1700#.  I still have to back it on my trailer.

Having your top link on you bale fork up as high as you can helps roll the weight onto the tractor instead of just lifting it. Most bale forks have correct 3pt geometry and that aint no good for heavy bales. For PTO drive equipment its important, for bales it aint. Just gotta make sure it don't hit on the back of the tractor. What works for one tractor can be different for another.

Will suitcase weights from a 7000 series fit on a 170 factory weight bracket? or any other kind of weight fit.

Could take the weight bracket off and put the large 100 series weight on the front which i think is at least 200 pounds. If that is not enough you could add on some of the smaller weigths to the front of the large weight there AM numer is 5582. I don't think 7000 series weights would fit or look good on the front unless you made a different bracket for them.

Josh NE,

Why not try using a separate set of front tires loaded with Calcium for your 3pt needs?  A good set of 11Lx15s or 11Lx16s filled with calcium should give you enough weight.  They also put the weight in a lower wheel position that should not tax your front end suspension pivots as badly.  With front wheel weight, the front end pivot forces are only being transferred during a loaded 3pt time.  During this loaded time, a opposite downward pulling force is being encountered on the front end pivots.  This is opposite of hanging frame weight dynamics.  The same forces would apply to your front wheel bearings.  When the 3pt is unloaded, very little identical forces on these compoments are being transferred.

When you want to use the tractor for field work, just switch out your weighted 11Lx15s back to your empty stock 9.5x15s.  Otherwise, hanging weight on the upper front frame puts downward forces on the front end pivots & wheel bearings most of the time the 3pt is empty or not fully loaded.  Front hanging weight only equals when the rear 3pt weight matches it and that is when most front end pivot & wheel bearing loads are at their least forces.  Which is usually never, cause then you can't steer it.

In addition, wheel weight will allow your front end to be uncluttered and shorter for barn manuvering in close quarters.  The 11L wider tires will also give it somewhat better floatation for the added weight.

I don't know how much weight you could add as calcium to a pair of 11Lx15s or 16s but someone on here should know or your local tire shop man will know.

Good idea, Eric....and probably just as cheap or cheaper than a set of suitcase weights.  My 175 only has 9.5's...I remember the first time I took one off to put the 20's on...I thought it was froze to the ground LOL! They can hold a lot of weight in fluid!

I run a similar mower on my D-17.  I have the horse shoe shaped weight which I think is about 200# and loaded rear tires and the front end stays put real well.  I wonder if maybe my mower sits closer to the tractor.
