I know I live in the state with the worst lunatics, but I thought it was all over the USA that only live traps were sold legally.
This is what is popular here. CatchMor Squirrelinator Squirrel Trap with Basin at Tractor Supply Co But your squirrels may be different. I have never bought one. But the neighbors with a winery have bunch and have run over some mowing, lazy help pitches them over my fence. With our burrowing, living in the ground squirrels they work better than I thought they would. My son has rebuilt them. A small amount of grain as bait. Then drop in water trough when you have squirrels in it. On a note of caution, one morning going to feed horses had skunk in one. Went way around got horses feed, left skunk to my son. By afternoon buzzards had cleaned up skunk without taking it out of trap. It was a hot day, trap in sun. Been told since, that if skunk cannot lift tail, cannot spray. I will let others test that theory. With our squirrels poison is only way to really cut the population down.

Looked at the trap online and the reviews are mostly either good or terrible. I wonder if the trap is designed more for ground squirrels rather than tree rats?

Well, I don't have tree squirels,,,but i gots plenty of them danged ground squirrels and they will damage or even kill a tree or bush, by eating the roots, I've tried two types of traps and my pellet gun but best medicine is the exhaust pipe from my old wore out rider mower,,,,,!!!

I have had great success using a Conibear/Duke 110 trap. I take a scrap piece of 1X6, hammer two roofing nails in with heads exposed about an inch. Use some baling wire or metal coat hanger to secure wood to a tree above 6 feet from the ground. anchor the trap chain on the coat hanger loop, set the trap and hang it on the nails so squirrel goes up/down into the trap/ I have used marshmallows and peanut butter on the trigger. There are lots of you-tube videos of this type of setup. It can catch more than squirrels so be carefull.

Thanks David! That should work for me. I've been looking at the Duke traps online. Also wondered about how to mount them. Upside down sounds good.
