Chunked a bearing on the main shaft and I see the bearing housing is cracked
Is there a trick to removing these pulleys?

Ive got a L3 that looks just like that and ive had that pulley off to put bearings on the main shaft. I didnt have any problem getting it off. If you decide to use heat id be very careful with it. I dont know how much heat the laminations in that header clutch coil will stand
Good luck |

My assumption is after removing three bolts off the main pulley, it would just pop loose. The 3 jaw puller has a lot tension at the moment. Figured I could heat near the center if that's all it takes then tackle the clutch. I know a guy near Preston, may have bearing housing

Screw the 5/16s bolts that you took out into the other holes and it will push off quite easily. Blow the holes out first, plenty of lube, and alternate the tension.

Lynn has your answer. My F2 is like that. Once you figure it out it's a breeze. Probably in the service manual which nobody has....
The engineers were thinking. When i do a mainshaft brg, I do both sides. That other one has as many hrs on it. When I got my 4000hr R62 I wish i'd sent it to the shop for PM and had new main brgs installed. A couple years in it ate the rt side and of course spun on shaft and ruined it. Would have been half price or less. Think that shaft was around $3500.

Kinda wondered if that was case. I did try that but bolts didn't seem to do anything. I'll clean it out good and try again. Thanks |

To push with I'd get grade 8 bolts and grind the ends off just a little so when they mushroom it won't be an issue backing them out

So this morning we went back and blasted some air into all the holes and sure enough there were threads to engage in as Lynn had stated. Lube and sent the bolts in. Got really really tight. My thread chasers aren't long enough reach in and I thought they were bottomed anyway. Mind you the 3 jaw is still in place. Next I brought out the torch and gave it 3 heat cycles. Went and picked up walnuts for while allowing it to cool. Began the tightening sequence again along with the 3 jaw and all were really tight again then noticed one bolt turning more than the others when POP!! The whole works jumped off and hit the ground. This is a tapered hub and bushing assembly. On closer inspection, two bolts never passed through .the hub. The threads were not clean enough. Now down the inner hub and need a different puller.
Back at it after lunch |
