I've got a D17 Series IV that's got 3-point arms that don't want to move.
All of the levers are moving (I sprayed some lubricant to really free them), and some will make some noises...but the 3-point arms don't want to move. I believe I'm supposed to put both of the rear levers (traction control) to the forward position, then the farthest right lever in the front (set of 3) is the one that should control the 3-point arms (up and down). I move that lever forward and back while stepping/jumping on the 3-point arms and they aren't moving. Any ideas? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

What does the operators manual say? You may have the levers moving but not the valve spool itself.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

On the front right lever witch is the main three point hitch control you should be able to feel the detents as you move it

I assume the arms go up when the tractor is running and lower when the engine is off.
If all your linkages are moving and not worn excessively, refer to your picture between the hydraulic cylinder and the Position / Traction levers. On the cap with Allen head bolts holding the cap, behind the hydraulic arms lever (nearest the fender), remove the two Allen screws and remove the cap. Spray a little light oil on the plunger, then use a punch and tap the plunger forward. You may have to do it a few times until it moves easily. Edited by WF owner - 11 Oct 2026 at 5:56am |

Both rear levers should be pushed forward to the front of the tractor. If that doesn't help, your linkage under the console is seized up. There are 2 or 3 pivot points under there that should move freely by hand. If any of them are stuck, you will have the problem you currently have. You have to get under there and lubricate them good so they move freely. It's a common problem after 60 years without lubrication. The traction booster could also be stuck, but from my experience, 90% of the time the linkage is the problem.

DID you just buy this tractor ?? and the arms were already up ?? I would approach this a little differently. I think your cylinders are STUCK in the extended position from being left there for years. Disconnect the hyd hoses on each cylinder. Use a 8 or 10 foot pipe to try and pry the arms down. I'll bet you'll wind using a chain wrapped around the top and a tractor to jerk them downward. If you get them down, reconnect hoses and if they raise back up on their own, you do have a linkage problem. My point is those arms don't always drop down from their own weight.....They just don't especially if they are stuck.

It sat for about 12 years with the arms in that position...so I'm sure that's not helping anything.
I lubricated the linkage on the levers and from what I can see, they're all freely moving and pushing/pulling what they should be. The 3-point arms just don't want to go down. I appreciate the help! |

Ive got a 8070 that does the same thing. I take a comealong and hook to the arms and go under the drawbar and pull them down. After they start moving it works fine. Ive sprayed around the rockshaft with penetrant and i think that helps some but it still sticks sometimes

I have the same issue with a D17 Series 4 I purchased. It appeared the lift arms were up, hydraulic cylinders extended, for a long time prior to my ownership. I decided to remove the cylinders and have a local shop ensure they work properly. They had a hard time getting the frozen cylinders to retract. Putting the repaired cylinders back on the tractor helped the issue. The lift arms will go down. Unfortunately, if they are left up long enough (maybe a few months) more than a couple hundred pounds is needed to encourage them to go down. I have also lubricated everything I can see to be a moving part within the linkage, including the plunger under the cap secured by allen screws. I would definitely confirm the cylinders are not frozen in the extended position.

I appreciate all of the suggestions!
I managed to wrestle a rear 3-point blade on with the arms stuck where they are. With the added weight, plus cranking downward with my comealong, unfortunately the 3-point arms are still stuck. I'll pop off the cover for the valve on the right next, hoping that the float inside is stuck and that's the problem. If anybody has any other recommendations, I'm all ears! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Crack the hoses loose on the cylinders and see if oil will bleed out of the cylinders.

I agree with Lynn. Was thinking the same thing. Could have a seal failure letting oil get behind cylinder shaft. I’ve had it happen on multiple hydraulic cylinders.

If you don't crack the cylinder hoses loose first, you are going about this bass-ackwards.

Those are single acting cylinders take everything off the three point and crack the lines going to the cylinder as Doc says
If the lines are cracked or even undone with no weight on the three point then try to push them down by hand if they won’t go down take them off and have them redone they are probably rusted up from lack of use The reason to remove all weight from the three point when you crack the lines is that it could be a linkage issue and don’t want anyone to get hurt if whatever is on it falls |

Take a 7/8" wrench and loosen just one of the connections at the base of ONE cylinder !!! They are teed together so you only need one leak !! Loosen it a couple of turns and if the weight of that blade doesn't start the arms to drop, the cylinders are STUCK !!! Stand in front of the rear wheel away from the blade to keep yourself safe. This isn't a difficult test and a very accurate one at that.

My CA was stuck after sitting 30 years. Completely unmovable. The cylinders were fine, it was the rockshaft that was rusted fast.
