OK neighbour is 'upset'. Trouble was foot valve(pump was cycling on-off a lot..), we FOUND the well, he replaces the foot valve( 80'down, 40' water),turns pump back on, prime, purge, can't get more than 30#s and it shuts off. had been 40#s for years.... Replaces the deep well jet pump, SAME problem not enough pressure, adjusts 'flow ? ' nut ?? whatever you call it, no NO water, even after priming, etc.

 Any words of wisdom ??
Hints for happiness ??

Foot valve should not cause cycling unless the foot valve is leaking, that sounds like a waterlogged pressure tank. There  may be a leak in one of the pipes going down to the foot valve that has gotten worse. Checking for that means pulling the foot valve out of the well. Put the diverter valve back to its original position and try again. The diverter valve controls how much water is sent back down to the foot valve/jet package to bring up more water. A submersible pump eliminates this one variable. A defective pressure switch could cause the pump to cut off at too low a pressure.  It takes looking at the system as a whole to determine what isn’t working properly.

thanks for the info...

he has a new foot valve, can take prime so don't think a pipe is leaking
he has 41# air in pressure tank ,old pump  was set for 30/40  (for years....)
new pump is a Red Lion brand.... I suggested he call them....

good gauge( it moves...unlike mine...)

what should have been a 'simple' replace foot valve has turned into a 2 week nightmare...

just trying to help ( I dug the wellhead out ONCE we found it..... )

Normal pressure switch setting is either 30/50 or 40/60 depending upon the size of the pump and age/condition of the plumbing. The air pressure in the tank should be slightly lower than the cut in setting on the pressure switch IIRC.

Maybe when replacing the foot valve, they dislodged some rust or foreign material and it ended up restricting the opening of the pressure switch?

An old plumber I know told me that anytime he pulls the (black plastic) lines out of a well, he replaces the lines.

if the pump shuts off, then the PRESSURE REGULATOR is doing it... If you get 30 psi and the pump is STILL RUNNING and wont reach 40 psi, then the pump has a problem.

Why is the air tank set at 41 psi and the cut in and out of the regulator is 30/ 40 psi ?? I always set the tank at the LOWER pressure - the cut in point..  Try dropping air pressure to 30 and see what happens... Does the tank have a BLADDER for the air (bag)..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

why 41... been that way for years....I always though 2$ over the pump cutoff.....
yes bladder in tank

for years he never touched anything, always worked.
then, on-off cycling, so everyone figured 'foot valve' had 40#s then goes down to 30 #,pump comes on. crap in valve would do that.....

well is over 80' deep(foot valve there) , has 40' of water

water he pumps is clean, has opened every fixture,so no trapped air.

its a real puzzler....as he's done/checked everything  we can think of
what should have been an 'easy' job has become a nightmare.

BTW, local well guys want $3,000 to install a submerssible !
