My original steering wheel on my WD turns my hands black when you use it.
Is there anything a person can use to keep it from
doing so ?

Thats a good question. The only thing i can think of is a polyurethane paint like they put on wooden tables. You arent the first one ti have this trouble maybe somebody has a better idea

i spray paint them with rustolium black satin then i spray them agin and agin them old steeering wheels will soak up a lot of paint but it will make it look shiny and new looking and no more black hands , i also fill the cracks with spot putty because it sands easy but it does shrink bad so you have to do more coats regular bondo workks good also just a litttle harder to hand sand

I had one of my pulling tractors steering wheel wrapped in black electrical tape (good quality 3M) in a spirol. The whole wheel was covered and no black hands and hides the cracks.

Electrical tape might work until you're raking hay on a 100 degree+ day and the glue on the tape starts melting. Quality paint would be the better option in the long run, why set yourself up for a bigger mess later?

Another "not correct" and lazy approach is to simply use a steering wheel cover and lace it onto the wheel. Works ok unless your wheel is getting extreme use. Can't even imagine the process to remove & replace existing wheel.

I epoxied mine then used black spray paint. That wasn't holding up well so I switched to Rustoleum spray on bed liner. That stuff is holding up really well and I like the resulting appearance.

new wheels arnt that expensive for a wd , just drill out the pin and pull it off with a puller

Wear a tight-fitting pair of goatskin gloves (baling gloves). If you are baling or cultivating you may need the hand protection anyway! Problem solved.
