Does anyone know the depth of the CA fuel tank (bottom to bottom of filler opening)? Of course I can measure it when I get back in a few weeks (if I can remember).

The answer is 11.5 inches from bottom to bottom of fill opening. I wanted to see if any of those fuel gauge caps might work acceptably. Scaling isn't likely to be perfect in any case.

Ball peen hammer handle from tool box has worked since 1949....plus you get to know about how many hrs a tank will last depending on the task.

I have an original hand crank that always stays tucked in being the steering box bracket. The long end of the crank with the roll pin is a perfect length for a fuel gauge.

At the WHO tractor ride they gave us a paint stir stick marked in inches and down to quarters, I think. It's staying with the NFE 45, wish I had several more!

The only company that used to make them has stopped making the bayonet style. I didn't find that they ever made a 11.5 inch bayonet style. However, an ebay seller has a lot of their (Kelch) closeout stock. I purchased a 10 inch bayonet style. I think it will be fine for what I need (quickly determine if I'm near empty without stopping and getting the stick out of the toolbox). I may be able to mod it for improved low fuel level performance.

The purchased 10 inch fuel gauge works fairly well but requires further work. The 3M epoxy recommended for in-tank use is not suitable. It is softened by gasohol and is about to peel apart. So I've applied some better epoxy. In the mean time, I've ordered an 11.5 inch (non-bayonet) fuel gauge (that was very low cost) and may try to merge the two.
To install the 10 inch one, I acquired some additional foam float material and extended the float downward to get closer to the bottom of the tank. It works fairly well and with the tank roughly half full, the gauge reads roughly half full (slightly low). There isn't much room to fit additional float material so it's size and shape isn't optimal (wouldn't fit through the opening). But at least when it reads empty, it really is empty.

would not think accuracy is critical... empty is empty and half full is 40% or 60% or ??? You know what it is, thats all that counts !
