 Topic: 190XT Steering Problem

Our 190XT stopped steering. So far what I see is that there is no fluid flowing out of either hose going to the steering cylinder. My assumption is that the steering pump has failed. Do you guys agree? The lift on the back still works. I'm reading that there are 3 separate pumps and one is dedicated to the steering and likely needs rebuilding.

If the steering pump isn't pumping any oil, the tractor will NOT MOVE and pull any kind of a load. Yes or No ?? Power Director clutch creeping doesn't count as moving.

It doesn't really move and able to pull a load. On the back section of the hydraulic pump is a large hex plug facing out at you. Probably take a socket bigger than 1 1/4" to remove it. Remove the plug and spring and dig out the spool inside. The spool should slide freely in and out. Make sure it does. This is where to start.

Fluid level was good. We added one gallon but that was just to pull it up a little on the dipstick. I'll do / check both things suggested. Thank you

I still use my sump screen but others will tell to remove it. Filter been changed lately? If the pump is struggling to get oil to it all 3 functions will suffer. Steering, trans, hydraulics.

Sump screen should never be removed!!!!! It is not really a filter, but it keeps any schrapnel/metal/ failed P.D. debris from getting sucked up into the pump and locking it up and then breaking the nose off the camshaft. The very early 190/190XT's had a sump screen AND a suction filter inside the left side frame. A-C removed those suction filters because they were nothing but trouble. They never did away with the sump screen and you shouldn't either.

My bad. Unless your XT is a late series 3, I told you wrong. Your spool is on top of the pump on the rear section. Takes a 7/8" wrench. Remove oil fill neck to gain access. Spool still has to be free to slide up and down.

Every time it is said to start at that valve when there is any steering problem seems like. My tractor when first started sometimes has no steering, steering wheel spins and then it works fine even at idle can steer easily with small finger. Other times let it run for a min it's fine and sometimes it's fine off the bat. You said get the spool out so what's best to shine with?

Any fine sand paper or emery paper and clean everything well when done. No steering and no rear lift is different than no steering and a working lift. No nothing usually means a shaft seal on the pump or more likely time to re-seal/rebuild the pump as it loses prime and has nothing on a start-up. The more days it sits the worse it will be.

Probably not. Just depends on how deep the scratches are, if there are any.
