this may be elementary to many of you, but I never messed with anything other than a 'bumper hitch'. How does a fifth wheel hitch to the truck? Do I need to put holes in my bed? does it actually mount to the truck frame, or bed? Is there any way to avoind holes in the bed?

All I have seen requires holes in the bed.
The hitch actually attaches to the truck frame, with long bolts passing thru the bed, to the brackets attached to the frame. The fifth wheel hitch(or gooseneck hitch) does not attach to the bed.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

normally the bed is not substantial enough... bolt go thru the bed into a bracket that attaches to the frame.. SOLID.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Thanks, that's what I though. I'm looking at camper trailers, but not holes in my bed. I thought I saw a goose neck hitch that only required on hole and came with a plug. still a hole, but not as bad as four!

you can get a HIDDEN hitch that mounts under the bed and pops up... Or you can have BRACKETS that mount to the bed floor and the hitch is removable... That way you still have an open truck bed for moving other objects... but you would have a braket or two sticking up 2 inches above the floor when you remove the "hitch".

simple goose neck floor mount..

this is a 5th wheel, but you can see the BRACKETS that bolt to the floor... make sure what hitch your trailer has...

B+W hitches mount to the frame below the bed and the only holes are a 3 inch hole for the flip over ball and 4 1/2 in holes for the safety chain hooks.

thanks guys, think I'll stick with the 'bumper hitch'. The trailer w/gooseneck I was looking at is bigger than I wanted anyhow. Just my bride and dog and me, we don't need the Taja Mahal dragging behind us.

Horror Story, BILs neighbor had a Heavy Half GMC pickup, was all excited to show off his 42' Fifth Wheel rolling palace on three axles, stated unequivocally the truck pulled it just fine at over 65mph.

As I walked around it I noted cracking in the bed floor, where the owner noted was taking it back to the dealer(Was six months old) to have bed replaced as had to be under warranty.  Quick look Under the bed there was no connecting equipment to the frame from the hitch.  Weeks later the BIL noted his neighbor had wrecked both the camper and truck, dealer was infuriated as to the haphazard hitch install and had declined warranty, the neighbor was looking to a attorney to sue for damage to his new truck where had also set reservations in CO for a week stay and had left on that trip.  As crossed into CO at Kanorado they noted had felt a 'Bump' then all hell broke out, truck was weaving and swinging then onto the shoulder and rolled over, the camper had come disconnected and snagged the tailgate sending the truck into uncontrollable before separating and sending both to history.

Final notations were the bed floor failed, the bolting points cracked out where he had added plate reinforcements that pulled thru the cracked floor, NOT EVER did he install to frame bracing.  His Insurer declined to pay for damages, did pay off remnant loan amounts but the neighbor received NADA as had failed to establish a safe hitch install, so he sued the insurer and lost that as well.  The neighbor who is still the neighbor currently have another now ton truck(Used) some ten years later and somewhat smallish (Also used) bumper pull camper, kids are grown and gone where he and his Current wife, Not the one had when wrecked now almost two decades ago divorcing he back then, only use those for more local State Park campgrounds inside MO and IL.

A 5th wheel hitch and gooseneck hitch are very different things. There are converters made to go both ways. From the research I did not good way to go if if a more than occasional thing.

As Steve's picture shows no extra holes needed in your bed. For 5th wheel hitch.

I bought an older truck with the 5th wheel hitch. Removed it bought a BW gooseneck hitch. Dealer had one in stock for for a 20+ year old truck Wink used that old frugal ( tight wad AC  owner ) line on them and got a very good deal on it.

We have had a gooseneck trailer here since 1975. The Oke's that sold the trailer new installed the first hitch for my dad. By todays standards very crude. Two 2 inch angle irons with 10 inch channel iron weld between with the ball welded to the channel iron. So a major obstacle that stayed in the truck bed forever.

The next truck got fold down ball installed. Had professional welding shop do it. Lifted the bed welded a piece between frame rails, cut the hole in bed and bolted the ball in.

Since the 90's all 3/4 tons have holes factor drilled install the hitches I believe. So at most a little measuring and the right size hole saw and bolt things in. And none of the trouble DMiler was telling of.
