Does anybody know the difference in gearing between the different Allis d17s? I've heard that diesel 17s are geared lower than the gassers. I've also heard that the series 3 and 4 are different than the 1 and 2s. I can't find anything on the LP gas version.

Thank you, I tried to search but the site kept telling me I didn't have permission. That post answered most of my questions

The difference in D-17 S1 and S2 versus the S3 and S4 was for durability. The ratio change of 1% is nothing. If one final was spun fast enough to do 100 MPH the other would only do 99 MPH.

The best way I have found to search the forum is to use Google and, in this case, search something like "Allis Chalmers Forum D-17 gear ratio".

175-180-185 final drives are 5.85 to 1 ratio, about 7% SLOWER than any D-17 or 170.
