Hi folks,
My 180 has started leaking hydraulic fluid out of the rear valve spool cap for the lift arms - leaking out of the plug #23 in the picture below. It's a slow drip when the arms aren't being used, but has progressed to a steady stream when they're being operated - especially under a heavy load like my bale wrapper. I'm hoping it's just a dried-up/perished o-ring, and I'll be able to fix by replacing the o-rings #6, 16, 26, and 27. Does this sound like a reasonable first step? Is there anything I should be concerned apart when disassembling that valve body? It looks like the spool has four ball bearing detents that sit inside collar #17, and I'll bet I have to be careful to not lose those and disassemble it carefully and cleanly. But apart from that I'm thinking (hoping) it will be straight forward? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. ![]() |

#20 I gave up years ago trying to use a screwdriver to loosen or tighten. I use a vise-grips by sliding the spring cup ahead and having the other end of the spool correctly clamped in a vise. The detent balls are a problem !!! especially if you've never dealt with them before. #27 I try to avoid replacing unless I have to. You'll see why if you do.

Thanks Doc! Got it done yesterday, and just like you I used vice grips on #20. Didn't remove the detent adjustment set-screw (#21) as the whole end under the cap was very much rusted and seized. Probably could have got it with the right careful application of heat, but I was worried if it didn't loosen, then I'd have melted the #27 o-ring with no way of replacing it. And because I need this tractor for baling and wrapping in the near future. I didn't want to risk it. So far so good, o-ring #6 was definitely scarred.

Mine is leaking out the hole also. Is there a step by step on how to fix it somewhere?

I'm sure in the official AC service manual there are some instructions. An I & T manual you'd need to buy a 170-175-180-185-190 book, not a D-17 book. Disconnect the control lever clip and pin at the front of the leaking spool. Clean this area well from any dirt. Remove the two long Allen head bolts (with spacers) at the rear; Remove the long cover. Grab hold of what remains and gently pull and twist and the whole spool comes out. Wrap the assembly with a clean rag to contain things. Be careful what you do and don't mess with or lose any detent balls.

AGCO has a kit of new seals and O rings to reseal the valve body. Used it on my 190 6 years ago and has not leaked since.
