As mentioned in last post changed fuel filters on the Perkins 4-236 and when going to restart - noise from starter - Nose Cone on starter broke off was found after removing it , cast housing completely severed from mounting flange .
So out to storage and found 3 starters off my White 6-200A gas engine with same bolt pattern . Steal nose casting off one and put it on my broken starter . Used solonoid and the arm that moves the starter drive off same starter . Put back onto machine and drive will not go into flywheel ( just powers up motor to spin )
As it got up to 45 F yesterday pulled starter off (outside in parking area) and checking found the solonoid plunger seemed to have a lot of play but when checking closer the dogs on the end of the lever that engage into starter drive were worn down , both sides show heavy wear . Found another arm on another starter so back together and actually works .
Starter has 3 bushings in it - both ends and a intermediate bearing at start of nose casting and armature . Little more involved in assembly as in stages putting back together . OH and after getting it running - the 10SI alternator isn't charging -  another tomorrow job .

10SI alternator has a tach drive terminal , so 3 terminals from top of case .
Just replaced alternator with one off a GM vehicle (unsure of what) and now have charge , brushes worn and commentator worn with deep groves - might take armature from another unit , replace brushes and see if diode trio is good  - warm weather project .

Coke: Am wondering about the design life of the starter - was it the OEM starter? If so assuming your 715 is a B Series that's a 40 + year design life.

Here's a good read on the initiation of electronic starter development for internal combustion engines ~ link here: https://markstrecker.com/invention-of-the-auto-electric-starter.html

Keep up the good work!

this is the 3rd time starter has been worked on - 2nd time nose cone broke ,
I bought the machine in 88 with 2,000 hours on it from municipality use .
Why the cone broke hard to say as was a fresh crack , no rust or discoloration along fracture
