Was just wondering if there was a difference between the maroon belly 7000 differential and the black belly differential. Looking to get one to stuff in a 185 rear. Thanks!!

200,7000 early and late all had an assy 70253512.... but a lot of difference from a 185..

The RH bearing and cup are larger. Don't know if the RH bearing carrier could stand that much material being removed. We've always run the stock 2-pinion with needles on the pin and in later years went to flat needle bearings behind the side gears for thrust. We run 6700 lbs in a gear 20% faster than road gear with 24.5 x 32's , twin turbos at 1200+ HP. I wouldn't think about a 4-pinion for what we have and you'll still have to needle the 4-pinion.

This tractor will be a 362cu in alky. We run 7000lbs here. I have no idea on what HP I will be running, but I would think it would be around 1000, give or take. I appreciate the advice. Might be just as far ahead needling the two pinion that is in it. I had heard of people stuffing a four pinion in them, that's all.

Whichever way you go, be sure to mark your transmission dipstick to carry the oil level at least 1 inch higher than it is marked for. And use 821XL or equivalent oil.

Thanks Dr. You advice is much appreciated. Excuse my ignorance, but you spoke of the flat needle on the ring gear for thrust. Is that like what I have heard of some guys putting a brass block on the side of the housing to keep the ring gear from spreading? Thanks again.

Whenever I needled a 2-pinion diff pin in a 180/185, I always found a pair of brass side gear thrust washers from a WD/WD45, which hold up better than the steel ones in a 2-pinion diff. Seems like when we got over that 1,000 HP number, the owner said the brakes seemed to be ineffective when trying to aim or steer the tractor going down the track at 40+ MPH wheel speed. I think a stronger legged driver wouldn't have complained, but maybe there was sooooo much pressure on the differentials side gears it was acting like a diff lock. Anyway, I tore the diff out of it one winter and changed out the brass thrust washers to flat needle brgs and races. No more complaints after that. We've always had the brass rub block behind the ring gear on the right side to help prevent too much spreading of the ring and pinion gears when under load.
