 Topic: WD 45 Air Cleaner Modification??

Hey guys,
I have a 1956 WD45. I use it for general maintenance and work around the property. I am struggling to find an oil bath air cleaner that isn't rusted out. Mine is absolutely destroyed, and I don't even feel comfortable having it attached to the carburetor at this time. Has anyone ever modified their tractor to use a more modern air-cleaning process, filter or otherwise?
I am more concerned with function and maintaining the quality operation of the tractor than keeping it original. Thinking I might modify it to have a straight pipe out the top with a motorcycle-style cone air filter out the top. Or possibly fabricating a mount for a forklift air filter housing. These have a replaceable filter, run about the same size housing, and are only $50. But these are just ideas.
Side note, if anyone has any eccentric pins or the entire assembly, I stripped one out while narrowing my wheel base. Nobody online has them for the WD. And eBay isn't really where I want to purchase right now. Too much risk of not getting the entire assembly or the square head version from other models.

My oil bath cleaner wasn't as far gone as yours. It simply was packed with dirt and obviously never seen a pre-cleaner. Until I could get it off & cleaned up, I fastened a K & N cone filter RC-1250 directly to the carb using piece of hose & a couple of clamps. The "correct police" wouldn't care for it, but it worked. The cone is not very big & I was worried if enough air was getting through. Just used on a bush hog so not a continuous heavy load-power was ok. I wouldn't think a bone yard find of a used one would be that difficult. Try contacting Austin Salvage in Butler, Mo.

I don't think those K & N filters (that require oil on them to work) were ever intended for farm tractor dust and dirt.

Probably not. This filter is dry/washable & probably for a motorcycle application. It was a short-term fix and not subject to dirty field tillage conditions. Sometimes I improvise when waiting for a permanent proper fix, especially on the old stuff. The pullers use some variation of this but they're not in much dirt or dust either.

If you want to take a three hour trip I've both of what you want or you can go to Colfax tractor parts which isn't the far from you, 10447 field ave. Colfax, Ia 515-674-3001

I'd talk to Lon. Colfax might have one but I wouldn't bet my bottom dollar on it. Not many 45's sitting around over there last I knew. If all else fails, I might have a good one around here somewhere. Only 7 miles from the Colfax yard so a trip here wouldn't be much further.

I remember years ago,, maybe long enough to have been on the 'old forum,, someone had replaced the oil bath air cleaner with a dry air cleaner. It was one like the larger ,late models but fit in place of the original oil bath..
ya might search some name brand air cleaner for something similar..

There are soo many WD45's it shouldn't be hard to find one. Orange Knight or Bill Deppe probably have some. Orange Knight's probably scrapping some right now to prepare for his move.
