A buddy of mine, of the Meadow Green persuasion, shot this last Saturday at the Collins Ia. plow day. He got some great footage of both my rigs. My buddy Dan was at the helm of the 856 while I was piloting the 45. At one point you can see the sidewall on the 8 wrinkling. That 'ol dirt was tough!

Glad I wasn't there !!! I wouldn't have had enough front end weight on my WD-45 and 73 x 14's series plow. You could see all the plows struggling to stay in the ground it was soooo hard.

Doc, you are correct! Both tractors would have benefited from more front weight. I've got eight 100 pounders on the 856 and it would have been nice to have had all 12. Lots of plows floating up, the 565 stayed in the ground as well or better than most. Did a good job too. And really, the 45/73 did a respectable job too.

856 and plow did the best, but that WD-45 and 73 looked pretty darn good for an older light weight plow. I might have tried to turn the depth crank 5 or 6 turns out to bring the front bottom up a little shallower. Might not have worked out. Might have needed the plow frame a little bit nose down to get it in that hard black dirt !! The big plow in the lead must have needed new plow shares ??

Doc, I'm not sure what the deal was with it. Wilrich plow, I was going to drive the 1066 up and pull that plow but opted for the 856. It was a chilly ride in the morning! Coming home was nice. We tried various depth setting on the beaming screw, that's as good as it got. I have to crank it all the way up to get on/off the trailer. Generally let it down 25-30 turns to start and go from there. Started at 30, I cranked it up 5 and Dan 5 more later on.

My Dad tells about one year in SE Iowa in 1940s to early 1950s it was so dry on grandpas farm they could not get the trailer plow in the ground that was pulled by a Massey 44. Grandpa had a MH 22 I think it was and it had a 3 point hitch plow and they could get it in the ground and it did all the plowing.
