Need to replace the Ignition Switch on my 185. I removed the sheetmetal shroud on top of the hood and was able to determine with a test light that I'm not getting any power from the BAT side to the IGN side of the switch in the "on" position which causes no power to the push button start switch. The service manual does not cover removing the Instrument Panel. What all do I need to do/remove to gain access to the back of the Instrument Panel?? Does the large sheetmetal cover directly in front of the gear shift need to removed??

Thanx for your help.
Chris

Just remove top cover only.    This is how I do them .
I get all wires put on switch and then reinstall. also put eyelets on push button switch ,pull it out do the wires and put it back in.

I also replace ends on switch wires

You've got the cover over the top/rear of instrument panel off?
Get a new OEM style replacement switch.
Remove negative battery cables from batt posts.
All you need do is remove the outer nut that holds switch in place, move switch back out of hole so is easier to get to terminals. Move wires 1 at a time from old to new switches, slide new switch into hole in dash, install & tighten nut, reinstall cover. Be careful not to strip the nut or the screws holding the cover in place.
