I have a 5040 which we are rebuilding. The engine is now complete, and all put back together. When we fired it up and drive it around the rear wheels locked up with 1/4 turn in either direction. When I took the wheels off the hubs rotate without locking up. It is more like a hard stop that occurs with the wheels on. So freely turning without the rear wheels on and stops at 1/4 turn with the wheels on. I hope someone has an idea about this before I have to do a lot of work that probably isn't required.

So it sounds like the wheel Is catching on something. You should be able to figure that out.

Are the lug nuts the proper ones for this tractor? May be too long?

“When I take the wheels off”…do you have both sides off at the same time?

There is something in the axle housing where the hard hit sound comes from. Someone else asked about the lug bolts and the ones we have are what have been in place.

The wheels were on when the engine was rebuilt. The clutch was replaced but nothing in the rear end. Changed oil. This is a new to us tractor that had 800 hours. It had been sitting outside and water ended up in the engine. We bought it knowing there would be some issues. We have a same model for spare parts. We have a vineyard and there is a specific piece of tilling and hedging equipment that matches to the mounts which is why we bought a duplicate.

I am not certain as to if the tractor was moved ie rolled when the engine was rebuilt.

Have you tried jacking the rear of the tractor off the ground and rotating the tires by hand without the engine running and the transmission in neutral? Sounds like it may be the differential?

Yes. We have had it up on blocks with and without tires. It rotates 1/4 turn in either direction with the tires on and there is not an issue with the tires off. It is out of gear and the engine is not running.
