So, none of my 3 manuals say exactly where to connect the spring...I've connected it forward to the upper most manifold stud. It's too long to connect to the lower one. It doesn't look like it has much function in that position. I've also improved the throttle control linkage to give the full range of control (exactly). It was necessary to shave 1/32 inch off of each end of the metal bullet nside the governor spring to allow me to reach the first idle notch. So, some progress

The surge spring isn't really supposed to pull forward or backwards much. If you only knew how many tractors don't even have that spring anymore. As long as the governor isn't too goosey, you don't need it.

Had a look in the Allis Parts Catalog for CA's. P.18 for Governor with Magneto Ign., P.20 for Governor with Battery Ign. Just as the Dr. stated, the Spring basically doesn't appear to pull in either the Forward or Reverse direction. It is pictured as pulling Upwards in a vertical direction. The lower end of the Spring attaches through a hole located near the centre of the Rod. There is no reference to where the Upper End of the Spring is attached. G |
