Hey brother lovers of Allis Tractors.  It's been 20 years since she gave me any trouble and you were wonderful to take and answer noobie  my questions . Please let me know your advice about these two . I blew my head gasket  1. is it necessary to use a copper gasket sealer ( book says yes ) others say no . Lastly in dropping my pushrods down to the cam  they seem to drop lower than the lobe if just slightly off center . It makes me wonder if there was a tappet or camfollowers that might have dropped off and sitting in the oil pan or if the 10 does'nt use either . Please let me know  I only want her back on her feet again  All the best  Albert

It does have lifters-tappets. I wouldn't think one could be out of place without block failure. Never seen one collapse. I have seen the end of pushrod come off before.  JMHO, Tracy

Just saw a B engine that had been lately run with modern oil (little or no Zinc content) and the cam and lifters were worn out.
  The lifter bores are slightly off center to the lobes to make them spin along with the surface of the tappet being slightly convex also helps them spin to even out wear.
  When using oils without Zinc wear on the lobes and tappets is extremely accelerated.
  It would be wise to drop the oil pan for an inspection of the cam and tappets to decide if further  repair is needed.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Thanks Tracy for the quick reply and wisdom. Ill pull o couple of pushrods back out in the morning for pictures . My recollection is that when I pulled all 8 they came right up and the upper and lower ends were just shiny like chrome balls . I'll get back tomorrow and once again thanks Albert

The 'Solid' Lifters can only be installed or removed from the bottom of the Block after the Camshaft is removed.

Tracy , Paul B, and Gary   I'm almost back in the saddle ..thanks to all your help.
   Yes it had tappets and all were in place.  It took me 4 attempts of lowering the rocker assembly and aligning the push rod ends under it .and seeing if  they all went up and down The first  3 tries always had some that didn't . There wasn't a whole lot of light down there by the tappets and I had to feel them into place and it was hard to tell if they were in the socket or slightly off to the side .. In the end success and thanks  Guys

Hi Tracy. Paul and Gary  What are your thoughts on this new development ..Please . You last advice saved the day and I was up and running  I checked the oil a few times over the first few days ..looked perfect  but when checking the oil a week later it  was cloudy again .I drained the oil pan and out rushed a quart of water and then 4 qts of cloudy oil.
   Should I retorque the head bolts ..the tractor manual I have on the d10 didnt mention it but  but a car mechanic did. I also used a modern composite gasket and was told to put it on dry , no sealer. Though the manual said lather it on  and then lastly I reused the headbolts .  I drained the pan dry  left the plug out , filled the radiator, put a clean bucket under it and no water is leaking into the pan after 3 days of just sitting .  where did I go wrong .  All the best to you and my thanks   ; Albert
