The shop manual for the D17 series IV states to set valves 1,2,4, and 6 when TDC, then 3,5,7 and 8 at 90 degrees rotation of the crankshaft. Others have stated to set them in firing order, 1,2,4 and 3. Which is correct? Thanks.

Either way works. Set ALL at .015" COLD which that book will not tell you.

I haven't done many, but when I set them I just turn it over a few times watching and catch each valve when it's all the way closed. I don't worry about TDC and the firing order. These are pretty easy to do that way becasue duration is so short. They are fully closed most of the time.

4 cylinder overhead valve with the rocker cover off, it is pretty simple to watch the companion cylinder for the valves to be "on the rock" (exhaust valve closing and intake opening), to be in the correct place to set the valves on its cylinder with both valves closed, ready to fire. 1 and 4 are companions and 2 and 3 are companions.

Racer's set them the EOIC method, do each cylinder one at a time, as soon as the exhaust opens set the intake, as soon as the intake closes set the exhaust. I have used it for years.
