LinkedIn feed earlier today, a solicitation from a company wanting 100+/- owner operators w/pneumatic trailer for hauling sand, from Alvarado Tx to Midland Tx. 1099 classification. $7.00 per mile, loaded and empty. Ad claims a 36 month supply contract has been secured. Start date May 30 2024
I don’t have a tractor or a pneumatic trailer. But that would be hard running, everything would have to run perfect to be able to a complete turn, any hiccup, and you’ll be short on hours. Definitely will hit your 70 hours no problem. |

Hmmm... Sand from Alvarado to Midland? If it wasn't drilling work in the Permian, sounds like a concrete plant??? That's a 5hr run, you'd manage less than a run-and-a-half a day... 700mi if loading/unloading went fast... gross $4900/day... it'd cost $600ish in fuel stops so $4300... then maintenance, insurance, taxes...

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Yea, it would be near impossible to do a ‘complete turn’ a day everyday, everything would have to fall into place just perfect for that to happen. Any hiccup along the way, waiting line, road construction, potty breaks, etc., and the H.O.S. regulations will bite you. No wonder they are recruiting for 100 trucks.

So one would need load time - first stop , then unload time - last stop along with time to fill and dump trailer . If sand and air unloaded has to be dry as does trailer . https://www.google.com/search?q=Alvarado+Tx+to+Midland+Tx.&rlz=1C1CHWA_enUS627US627&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
So round would be 10 hours - out of 14 hours of day - little time to fuel, eat , or do much else . Running intra-state - is it logged as ? is a Electronic log required on truck ? Seem one is going to be spending many days holed up somewhere sleeping along the road so no day cab trucks . 4 hr 45 min (321.4 mi) via I-20 W |

Pneumatics are troublesome, cargo has to be dead dry or will pack and block. Then aggressive sand not good on components where maintenance will be mayhem at best.

Kinda surprised wanting pneumatic trailers, everything seems to transition to ‘sand cans’ or boxes. Of course then the rate would not be $7.00 per mi.

I pulled pneumatic trailers for over 40 years hauling nearly anything that would go through them including dried sludge from a wastewater plant. Some people do well unloading them while others are just an ongoing . Taking shortcuts unloading them will always come back to bite you in the YouKnowWhat. After giving up as an OO I had to train many new hires at the companies I worked at. Some were just hard on equipment and got hired anyway as they had a pulse, then when their trailer were always in the shop, I got to say "I told you so" often.
Probably the reason for pneumatic tankers is more to do with the delivery location. I'll bet that they are thinking is that trucks will be their storage and would be allowed to unload as the plant used material. From what I see, team drivers with sleepers would be needed to be practical.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |
