Need some help with an engine issue. Recently bought a Deutz Allis 6460. Starts right up and runs well. Under a load or at higher rpm it burns oil. The tractor only has a few thousand hours. Any help would be appreciated.

I must be losing it. I don't remember a model 6460 tractor. I remember a 6260.  Is this an air-cooled engine?? And by a few thousand hours, EXACTLY how many hours ??   If you burn 50 gallons of fuel do you have to add one gallon of motor oil ??? How much oil are you adding for 50 gallons of fuel use ?? Are you removing the engine oil dipstick first, wiping it off, waiting 30 seconds and then reinserting the dipstick and checking the oil level ?? You may be overfilling it if you're not checking the oil in this specific manner.

Yes would help to know correct model.  Not really any difference in any engine in burning oil - Rings/valve guides/air restriction and on Deutz there are plugs that cover the head bolts in the head - if on overheats sometimes the plug loosens up and lets oil in the manifold runner area.
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

Thank you for all the answers and questions. It is a 6260. I’ve only had the tractor for a very short time. I’ve run it about 8 hrs and only have put less then a quart of oil. I will pay attention when I check the oil. It is at the full mark. How would I check the plugs on the head bolts. It has 2320 hrs. The tractor is very clean other wise.

You have a 35 yr old tractor that averaged 66 hrs per year of use. Those air cooled engines were quite high quality but sometimes when not broken in properly or used properly, can have an oil consumption issue, or what some may perceive as an issue. I think you don't really have a problem. It just may take some adding of oil occasionally. Check the oil on a perfectly level spot and check it there all the time for accuracy. Pull the dipstick and wipe it off and wait a bit and reinsert for accurate readings. DO NOT add any oil until the oil level is at the BOTTOM of the "add-line" !!  The loose plug checking isn't your first thing to check. It would be after you determine what your actual consumption is first and the valve tappets would need to be adjusted at that same time. With only 2,000 hrs on this engine I can assure you there's nothing worn out unless the air filter has a hole in it. A clean air filter ( new is better) is important to cutting oil use on those engines. I think you have a good running, good starting engine right now. Don't get all upset because it takes some oil.  For 100 gallons of fuel burned, 1 gallon of oil added is perfectly acceptable for most engines. Two gallons per 100 of fuel might be acceptable for your engine because I don't think it's probably been broken in properly or used hard enough to get the piston rings seated. Jumping in and disassembling this engine at this time would be the worst decision ever made. Use it 100 hrs and keep a log book on oil use and only add when it's down at least a quart !!! Some engines like being there.
