Enjoyed my day with my buddies Mutt and Kenny. Kenny is 84 years old and was also the owner of our AC dealer until the end. Helping him repair his really nice original WD45D. Factory power steering. Kenny and Mutt found some coolant in the oil pan a few days ago so they began investigating by removing the oil pan. Allowed the engine to drain. Found the sleeve in #6 O-rings had been leaking. Pulled the head and used a sleeve puller to remove the sleeve. Crank lobes had some surface rust on them were it had leaked down on it. Otherwise the crank is in good shape. Rod bearing shows no issues. Ordered parts and hope to have it back together next week.

I will do that John. Need to get this out of the shop as he has sold it. WC will be rebuilt next. We are still in desperate need of rain here. Low 80’s again today with no rain in sight.

Robbie we've been getting your rain all summer and fall. Actually snow flurries today. Ray and his wife from MI were here today. He's never been in a 7000, so I had him get up in it. He liked it, but too big for his operation. Tim

I’m glad you 2 got together. 7000 is a nice tractor. Did you see pictures of his nice shop? Would love to have one that size. Look forward to the next time we can meet at a GOTO. Really enjoyed meeting you 2 in person in MD after talking on the forum.

Yes Ray has kept me updated with pictures. It will take him awhile to fill it, lol. Yesterday on YouTube. I came across a video titled. Gathering of the Orange Maryland Steam Tractor Show 2022. By OldTractors. At 3.26 there we all are. Ray sitting on my 1935 WC. Tim |

Tim, I told Rob the same thing. We had a rainy summer this year just like you guys did up above us. Matter of fact, you guys were getting clobbered up there a few times with these wicked storms! We had three beautiful Fall days Thurs.-Sat. and we're back to rain again the past couple days... sigh.. Steve@B&B

Long story short, the lift pump sheared the key on the drive shaft due to the idler gear being stuck. Gear was stuck due to old fuel sitting in the pump for too long I assume. I tried to get him to pull the pump to have it serviced before we started this project but he declined to do it. With parts NLA, he is searching for another pump. In the meantime, I began to think would the pump and injector lines from a series 1 D17 work on the 230 Buda? Or would it require a total engine swap and would that work? Is the 12A pump too much for a 230? I’m just curious, he has a spare D17 engine with a rebuilt 12A pump. Probably a dumb idea but I’m curious. Remove the dual upper filters so it would be gravity fed. It already has the one big fuel filter under the tank. Always thought the dual filters mounted high on the engine was overkill requiring a lift pump to get fuel to the filters for a total of 3 fuel filters plus a sediment bowl. I’m sure someone has put a different pump on these 230’s?

Sounds feasible to me but not sure if the drive gears are the same to be timed correctly?
I'm sure someone out there has done this.

The injector pump on the 230 ran at crankshaft speed, while the D17 ran at half speed. So the drive gear train is different, and the housings that contain them.

“.Or would it require a total engine swap and would that work?”
I worked for a guy who put a D17D engine in a WD45D and it worked pretty well, but it was tough on rear axles. Maybe because he had clamp-on duals on it. And he for sure didn’t use it for PTO work. |
