 Topic: Overhead Drill Press ?

Who produce the best quality - longest design life assuming reasonable care and maintenance overhead drill press for metal boring and drilling. Am in the market for one and would be searching in the major urban areas of NYS which had abundant industry back in the day.
Am thinking Clausing or Delta Rockwell? Am wondering who(m) supplied overhead mills or drill presses to the military? Any specs. or specific models come to mind?

If your going to do milling also then no drillpress is going to have a spindle accurate enough to stand up . Look for a Bridgeport mill and use it for both a drill press and mill ,
I went throug sevearl drill press brands to find one where spindle even was accurate for drilling as runout on most imports was bad in accuracy on low cost modles .

Clausing, Powermatic, Rockwell Delta and Wilton all made some very good machines. If you are going to mill, buy a Bridgeport or quality copy of one, several very good vertical milling machines. JMHO, Tracy

I’d be looking on HGR and find one. I bought my mill from them and had it shipped 850 miles from Pa to Arkansas(2500lbs) for $450.00 The mill was $400

Look on Big Iron, the auction next week has a Bridge Port and a couple other machinist type items think they are located in Missouri

Son has found several mills on online auctions , bought a couple at low prices just for parts for his other mills . He has a 2 head mill he bought at a real low price as a oddity for anyone else to even bid on . It is a doner machine for his other units . He has a bridgeport for sale now (located in West Concord MN) and just sold his small IronWorker . Now as he has located to his own shop in his recient purchased building he has room over what he had in my back shop going from 800 sq ft to close to 4,000 sq ft Thing is now he has over 30 snow plows ordered from customers and steel prices have went up so much it's like 4 times the cost of material . He just ordered cutting edges and they were delivered the other day after 6 week wait , and ended up $10,000 worth of material was all punched the wrong size and out of the specifications of centering of holes . Supplier said it might take another 6 weeks to get replacements .

Yeah, if you're even CONSIDERING milling, don't bother looking at milling machines, and if you're remotely serious about milling anything other than wood, plastic, copper, brass, or aluminum, don't waste time and money on a benchtop mill-drill.
Go straight to a surplus Bridgeport J-head 'as a start'. My manual mills are Cincinnati & Kearney & Trecker... my CNC is a MAHO.

I screwed up years ago and purchased a No Name Grizzley, sold it and NEVER again. Tolerance retention was crap, maybe within .002, NOWHERE Near to .0005 advertised as just all slip or adjustable regions TOO Sloppy. Same with that Lathe I had, could manage .001 on a piece less than 12", for anything greater was not ever under .003. Even had a Millwright that set machines as these up look at them, NFG was his determination. Suggested buy a Well Worn fifty year old Clausing, Cincinnati or other OLD three Phase GOOD Lathes, and ONLY recommended as a Old Mill, Bridgeports.
