 Topic: 816 fuel in oil

Family 816 backhoe had gotten oil in the fuel some time ago and now it’s time to fix it. After looking through the book I’ve decided the most likely culprit is the fuel pump diaphragm has eroded and dumped fuel into the block, although it could be the injector pump(worst case scenario$$$). My question is does anyone have a source for a new diaphragm? I’ve got the part numbers from the book but haven’t found anything yet.

Found replacing the pump was easier than finding the diaphragm - seems with age it's a common problem for pump to leak internally and the bio-fuel seems to have hastened failure

I have a new OEM fuel pump for the Perkins 4-236. I would guess not much difference between the fuel pump for the Perkins 4-248 but uncertain on that. If you need the P/N kindly let me know and can dig it out. ~ Orangeman

You can do a little test that won't really cost you anything. Just disconnect the (primary) supply pump and bypass it. The machine will run fine on gravity feed. If the problem still persists you'll know it's from the injector pump. I used to run my 816's on gravity feed on an ongoing basis, in fact they had smoother idling this way too. Just be sure you have lots of fuel in the tank if you're facing a sharp uphill slope with the front end.

Thanks for the replies, found one online and ordered it. Took off the old one today and confirmed the diaphragm was bad. Should have it put together by next week and hopefully no other problems pop up. This backhoe has been in my family since the 80s.
