 Topic: D17 Gas Won't Fire

Used the D17 IV gas for an hour or so yesterday afternoon shredding sweet corn stalks and some brome grass. Shut it off to clean the shredder off. Let the tractor sit for a couple hours then went to start it to put it in the shed. It wouldn't even fire. It has half a tank of gas. Tried using starting fluid but still wouldn't fire. Pulled it into the shed and let it sit overnight. Tried this morning and still won't fire. Any ideas why this suddenly happened? Thanks, Dave

if it wont fire on starting fluid, then probably has no spark..
If you have a spare COIL, install that and test... If not the coil, then probably the Condenser inside the distributor. .............. verify SPARK.

Could be as simple as point gap. Check the easy stuff first and go from there.

Don't know if this could be an issue, but temp outside was over 100 in the afternoon. Tractor never overheated when operating (I paid attention to temp gauge) and when I stopped I let it idle for a brief period of time before shutting off. Could there be vapor lock?

Try pull starting it if the spark is weak it is usually weaker when turning over the starter.

Pull cap and rotor. Get distributor positioned so points are closed but will open when twisting shaft.(use the rotor) Pull coil wire from cap and hold near engine while twisting rotor opening/closing points. With the ignition on you should have spark jumping to ground. Have had to rub the points together on the WD more than once to get fire.

No spark at plugs. Did try pull starting when pulled to shed last night. Did not start. Thinking maybe the key switch, as thinking back it fired just a little when trying it yesterday then I think I did bump the switch and it never fired after that. Pulling switch to try to test it out.

Try a test light at the distributor.

take a jumper wire from the battery right to the coil terminal... (other side to the distributor)... that way you eliminate the switch and its wiring.

Well, tested the switch. It was ok. So, started with the electrical stuff. As Dan suggested, I cleaned off the points and distributor cap contacts. Put it back together. Fired right up. Boy, glad it got going. Thanks for all of your help. Diagnosing things is not my strong point. Once that worked and I got it running again, I was happy. Thanks again, Dave
