My h3 with early serial number appears to have a 160 engine instead of the 149. Did they put a160ci engine in h3 or is this a transplant

Later H3s used the 160, but it's basically the same as the 149 engine. Over 60 years, a lot can happen to a crawler or tractor. An engine transplant like this would not be unusual. The D15 Series 2 tractor and some off road forklifts used the 160 engine.

H-3 Crawler Serial Number from start of production to mid 1962 utilized a G-149 engine. After that the G-160 was used in the H-3.

Decades ago I had a H3 loader/backhoe. I was developing a small downhill ski area that would require a snowmaking system thus the need for a backhoe and slopes that required a crawler. There was a JD dozer/backhoe available at the same time but the AC was about 1/2 the price. The AC needed the tracks rebuilt but would be still less than the JD and would be confident that with rebuilt tracks I shouldn't have problems with losing a track on the slopes. The hoe was mounted in such a way that you could drop the hoe or reattach it in about 10 minutes so that you were not carrying the hoe around when it was not needed. Never ever had engine problems.

Red Power is another website like this one for IH tractors. Many of the same issues with communication mimic your problem and they are getting resolution as far as communication.

With many of these internet vendors, they do not have stock on anything at all. They are in an office cubical and only route orders to several places sourcing parts for an order from a database. It is why there can be such problems when errors occur as there can be several sub vendors to the original order. No real way to go to a single source solution especially when an order is placed incorrect. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not.
The "lowest price" shopping point is not always the best approach IMO.
