On a 301 engine, how many amps or watts is a glow plug intake manifold heater? I need a starter solenoid switch, right? Not a 40 amp automotive relay?  The inch square ones.

All the manifold heaters were operated by a solinoid switch. It looks like a starter solinoid for a old Ford but I don't know if it's just that.Don't know the amps but it uses cables not wires.

I was able to find a solenoid at a dealer for my 185 when it needed one.   I used a solenoid from a garden tractor for a forklift (same heater) when it needed one, worked good.  Ford's a good bet, look for single pull in terminal.

My A-C diesel forklift has a Ford starter solenoid supplying the power. You can buy high current(60Amp) push button switches that should work but cost more $$ !
I've thought about having a second battery just for the glowplug...another winter project !

The Ford starter solenoid sounds like a good idea.  The 7.3 diesel used basically the same solenoid for it glow plug controller.

I just tested the heater on my 180 and found that it draws 51 amps.

The glow plug relay on a 7.3L Ford looks similar, but they are not the same as the old fender mounted starter relay. The difference is they don't ground through the bracket, and if you buy them from Ford they're over $100.

I never said use a glow plug relay from Ford.  I said the fender solenoid would work as it is BASICALLY the same. Never claimed them identical.

As soon as I hit post I knew you'd chime in.

Same 'Ford ungrounded' relay is only $9.98 at the local Princess Auto, less than 10% of the Ford dealer's price !
