Starting Friday I started calling the Rogers Arkansas HD to check stock on a Door. I spent my lunch hour on hold and then made a few more attempts after lunch but never could get a person on the phone.
Saturday , knowing better I checked stock on the website and they said they had 3 in stock so off to the city I went. I had one to return/exchange. First stop was in the doors section. There were two associates in that dept. both had a line of at least 10 people each. I looked the entire door row over a couple times but never saw the door I needed. I then went to the return desk to meet urn the one I had. I stood in line for half an hour and finally got my turn. The lady was very nice, thorough and helpful. She apologized saying they are very very short handed and barely have enough help to keep the doors open. She called and called trying to find someone to find my door but never could . She called other stores in the area and found one 85 miles east of here. She was a very hard working lady and I truly appreciated her. When I was leaving it was hard to get out of the parking lot for all the beggars with signs asking for help. Half that town is shutting down due to not enough help. They say the big Walmart (the one closest to Walmart headquarters) has beggars walking up and down the turn lane knocking on windows begging. Sure doesn’t reflect what the local news says |

I've never understood people begging in front of a business that's hiring. I try to be a giving person but sometimes I just can't unless they have an obvious disability. Used to be around the old Braves stadium in downtown Atlanta, the beggers we're out until the game started harassing EVERYBODY. Then once people went in the stadium they'd go get in their car (usually the nicest one around) and drive off. Then when the game was over they'd be back.

I've seen beggers around here, they drive nicer cars than I do and most other people. one had a sign, asking for money for gas, also had a gas can beside him, I told him to give me his gas can and i'd go put some gas in it for him....nope...he only wanted the money! I didn't give him any. saw one begger, was a female and had a small child with her. sign said "hungry and homeless". the side door to the mini van was open and the floor boards were covered in Mcdonalds sacks. when I was still working, most of the beggers were making about $50=$75 thousand a year doing so. and it being tax free! As Tyler says above, if the beggers are in front or near by someplace that is hiring, they are fraudulant, don't donate!

What we are seeing in today's job market is the retiring of the "Baby Boomer's" which was the largest generation work force this country has ever seen! The new generations do not have the same work ethic as the Boomers with many being anti social and prefer to work from home! We also are reaping the whirlwind of College Education indoctrination over Service and Trade Jobs! The American people traditionally have been a generous society giving freely time and money.I believe there are a few as always taking advantage of our generosity! My wife would help anyone to her detriment and many times I have had to reign her in when people were obviously scamming her!

If they are begging, and riding around in a car... they are getting money somewhere.... Time to change the rules so those that CAN work , DO work..... Some are not able, but that number is MINIMAL.......... most people can do SOMETHING constructive.

Luckily my Home Depot experience with doors last week didn't involve beggars. Needed to replace 2 hollow core slab doors (we would cut the hinges/lockset) in one of our rental houses. One was 24" and the other 32". Our contractor was going on vacation in a few days so needed them almost right now. Menard's in my town had the 32" but 24" was special order, 2 weeks out which was past the date we had tenants moving in. The nearest Home Depot, 40 minutes away, showed one 24" and three 32" doors in stock on their website. Before I drive that far I called to make sure that their inventory was accurate.
Was put through to millwork and told the guy why I was calling to verify they had one 24" door and at least one 32" door in stock in the style that I needed as I was travelling 40 minutes to get there. He said "we have a lot of doors" I said "I know, do you have these doors?". He asked again what I needed and was it right hand or left hand swing? No swing, just a slab door. "We have some with lock sets drilled" Don't need one with a drilled lockset. Gave him the model number off the web site to help him find it. No help, needed the SKU. I said "okay, it says it is in bin "G5" does that help?" He said "I am by that bin, there is a a bunch of doors in there, I am sure we probably have it" By then time was a waistn' so I drove to the Home Depot, found the doors and of course do you think I could find one of the rolling carts to haul the doors up to be checked out? No. Any help around to help find a cart? No. Finally found a cart (or possibly stole it from a guy who was in the next aisle over) and loaded my doors to take up front to check out. Not a straight aisle in the store to go directly to the cashiers so weaving around POS displays with a barely steerable cart with 2 doors on it. 1 cashier covering 8 checkouts, and she wasn't even a cashier, a "customer service assistance specialist" or whatever she called herself. Finally got out of there and headed back home.
Some beggars along the side of the road would have been icing on the cake but the way my day was going wouldn't have surprised me. |

I've seen those beggars also, they don't want anything but money. It's a scam. They drive or get a ride there and drive or get a ride away from the business. I really hate seeing a good portion of my check going to the government for them to give it to someone that works the system.

That was a quiet week. In the 10 minutes or so I could stomach this morning there was 4 or 5 shootings and the weather. |

These "beggars" don't want a job, they can make more panhandling. Cut out the "free" government money and crack down on the street corner and parking lot pan handlers and the work force will increase. I support the local businesses when I can, better customer service and they can usually tell you if they have something in stock.
On a positive note, there is a guy that works in front of the local Lowe's or Wal Mart that has only one prosthetic arm and paints University of Georgia artwork with marking pens held in his mouth. He does accept donations for supplies and charges for his pictures, but I have never heard him ask for any money. He had to leave the downtown area because of being robbed by sorry pos several times.

Had a “anything helps” individual in the traffic median. Red light so I rolled down the window and he was immediately all smiles.
I pointed to the car wash and said they’re hiring and always looking for help. His response “that’s for high school kids”! I pointed to his sign and said “guess that’s a bit higher level for your age”. He provided some choice words and wasn’t smiling when the light turned green. I travel the country a lot and California, Seattle and Portland have horrible issues w these tent cities |

There’s a gal in the Midland/Odessa metro area, panhandles alternately between the two cities. Decades ago, she was involved in an auto accident, that resulted in one of her legs being amputated just below the hip. Of, course she stands there with her crutch, holding a cardboard sign saying ‘On My Last Leg’. At the end of her ‘workday’, she hobbles to her BMW parked a couple blocks away.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Couple Wal Marts in Western Illinois have people in wheel chairs working the cash registers.. have also seen one arm , Downs, and others with "challenges" working... If you WANT and job, someone will hire you..... Most of the beggers dont WANT...Dont support that.

There is another twist to this story. Report on news this morning.......famous restaurant in NYC......can't find help. Have had folks offer to come to work, but somehow are STILL on unemployment, so will only work for cash paid under the table. So it is a screwy time. Folks not working, yet have money to buy goods.....but with so many folks not working, no goods to buy. So to get anything you have to bid up the price.......inflationary. One of the few times I can think of when such an upside down condition has existed. It's like during the CA Gold Rush. Miners had money....nothing to buy. So would pay $10 in gold for a 1 cent egg. Get them ALL off unemployment, no choice but to work or starve.....and they will start showing up to work. Which is a big reason why the illegals are coming in droves. Where they come from, no social safety nets exists. Work or starve......and no work available. They get here and can't believe their good luck.

A lot of the people you see like that are unemployable via regular channels for reasons such as Criminal record, not being able to be pass drug tests, etc.
They might work out given the right conditions, but most companies don’t want to bother. And another sad fact is that a lot may be veterans.. |

Customers give me subway, steak and shake etc, gift cards as tips . Here get some lunch on meis what they say . Always have a few on the dash . I never give cash , but if someone looks hungry enough I will offer one . Gave one to a scarecrow standing by an intersection. Gave him a Steak and Shake gift card , "where is a steak and Shake? ". I pointed down the street and he started running that direction. That man was hungry. I have offered them to others . Most will say just keep it when they see it's not cash .

I offer panhandlers food or water, no candy or soda pop, Definitely NO MONEY, generally they do NOT accept, or if do accept, I watch in mirror where toss it behind a guard rail or in a ditch. Several here are Life Panhandlers, one in Auxvasse MO got caught where lived in Luxury and was Calculated as the IRS Watched them(HE WIFE AND CHILD) as they pulled in several HUNDRED$$$$ a day as to close to 50K tax free. Tax burden forced them to the street for real, the man and woman are working somewhere in Mexico MO currently.
