Starting to tear down my G for this winter's resto project, and was wondering if anyone knew of an outfit that sells a reman G engine. Preferably on the East Coast....TIA!

Not exactly sure, but don't limit your search to "allis chalmers G engine". The Continental N62 engine that was used in the G was also used in the Massey Harris Pony, and I think a few other things as well, so keep an eye out for them also.

Trouble is the N62 that fits a Pony won't fit a G. The starter is in a different location. I think the only difference is the block, that all the parts interchange, but in a fixed bore block you need the block to fit the tractor. Its not sleeved so it has to be bored when the cylinders are worn.

Cylinder heads are different too. Ponies have a neck for the upper rad hose cast into them and the G has the bolt on neck that sneaks around the fan. I looked into it when my head got stolen (among other things). |

Valu-bilt used to show the same head part number for Pony and G I thought. For years they had new replacement heads. But they don't admit it today on line.

And their 1995 catalog shows no head for the Pony, only the G but they show they same gasket kit for both which should work. Maybe they learned the G head and the pony didn't work.

When I rebuilt mine I found a place 25 miles from me that had several NOS N62 blocks that were for fork lifts they were the same as the G block except they had a place for a water pump and the hole for the oil filter was not bored I made a plate for the water pump and bored the filter hole and built a good engine. If anyone is interested I can check to see if he still has any of them
The head from a G will work on a Pony but a Pony head will not work on a G. |

I believe the governor was different in the G version of the N62. Allis-Chalmers used a "spider" type governor and I'm pretty sure the Massey-Harris Pony used a ball-bearing governor. I did find a ball-bearing governor in G112 when I tore it down. I don't know if this was a replacement or if the first few versions of the G were using the Continental governor.
