 Topic: LED headlights

Have to go thru 2 roundabouts coming out of town on the way home. SUV come up behind me and all I see in my back window and rear-view mirrors is headlights. Shortly after exiting the 2 roundabout, I had enough, I may have spotted a critter on the shoulder of the road  The SUV got a hard brake check, he didn't follow so close after that. You would think with all the technology in vehicles they could dim those lights automatically when approaching another car even from behind.

suppose to be 2 seconds behind the car in front.. at 60 MPH that is 88 ft x 2 or 178 ft... so at 30 mph that is 88 ft .... most people follow about half that... bugs me also.

That technology is in my cousin's Suburban. I think the LED's are pretty bright even on low beam

I have already called the sheriff's dept to complain about that same chit. I live 3 miles north of town with either of two main roads into town,,,,Night time TRaffic on either road is just waiting on a bad front end crash!! Speed limit is 50 MPH and most exceed that ALWAYS,,,coupled with all the newer trucks that have those HUGE tires with a humongous lift kit,,,,especially the new Fords that have the brightest lights in the world!!! My little HHR is at a definate disadvantage but my Sequoia can do battle with them azzholes that LOVE their bright lights and will one day cause someone getting hurt because of them frigging headlights. I remember there used to be roadblocks where your lights were checked and you got ticked if out of adjustment,,,wisht they would start that again,,,,,

My company truck (22 F250) has those problematic lights. In standard alignment, the low beams blind drivers, and the high beams are unuseable unless the roads are totally empty.
I had the dealership crank them all the way down for safety... because oncoming drivers would respond by going to high-beam, and blind everyone coming from my direction.
The truck has an 'automatic' feature where it changes from high to low, and low to high.
It is worthless, as it is constantly changing state when not necessary. Put it in low, it changes to high... put it in high, it bounces from high to low to high to low.
Just stupid BS technology. Fortunately, they put a switch position on the dashboard that defeats the automatic feature.
Just another reason why i will NEVER buy one of these trucks.

I very seldom drive at night.
I have a monthly meeting in. Berryville I have to drive home from in the dark. I’ve had a ceye injury a few years back and have problems driving at night.

In drivers ed they told use 1 car length for every 10 mph. That was near 50 years ago.

People today are assuming the ABS will save them, all too busy fumbling with all the bells whistles and contact screens trying to adjust hvac controls or automated functions they want on or off or entertainment equipment. Ride the car in front so have a idea they are still on the road.
Pulled up to a traffic light with two Left Turn lanes. Car beside us gal had phone in hand on speaker, gesturing with the other, obviously distracted, car in front of her moved about a foot, she let off the brake looked at passenger seat and drove into back of that car. Then got out frustrated screaming about making her drive into them.

I'm thinking with the LEDs they could have a automatic feature like the dimmer switch on your house lights that even when they are on low beam they would get dimmer when you are close to another vehicle.

My Father used to have a 1955 buick that had that "autronic eye on the dash and I would play with it by covering and uncovering it with left hand at the stop lights ,,,just drive that thing crazy going back and forth,,,,  It still worked when he sold the car,,

New rule on distance replaces the old rule , takes a bit but you count the distance in seconds from the time a object in front takes to pass a object along highway - until you get to that same place What is the 2-Second Rule?The 2-second rule is a technique used to estimate a safe following distance between your vehicle and the traffic ahead. It is a general rule of thumb taught in every driving school across the United States. The premise is that by following behind traffic by two seconds, you will have the time and space to brake safely. How Exactly Does the 2-second Rule Work?This rule requires that you maintain a safe following distance regardless of your driving speed. To estimate a safe distance, wait until the rear end of the vehicle you're following to pass a fixed object, such as an overhead road sign, a signpost, or a tree. When the car in front passes the landmark, the front of your vehicle should pass the same fixed point within the allotted two seconds. If you take less than two seconds, you should increase the distance. Repeat this method until you're able to maintain a distance of at least two seconds. The State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation also recommends drivers to adjust their driving to accommodate various road conditions. The DOT suggests using 3 seconds at night, and 4 seconds during bad weather. In addition, drivers should be more cautious when approaching intersections, changing lanes, and braking for a stop light.

I watch the hashed center or divider lines, try to leave five between myself and the car ahead on two lane, at least six to eight on interstate at speed. My Dad swore by that and has not failed me yet. On country roads with no passing striping I fall back to greater than 2 seconds as 2 is the minimum.

Even so almost every Ford truck you meet is still driving around with the bright lights on even during the day. For those that want to tailgate me with super bright lights, I can go slower 
Back before I retired I would regularly meet a motorcycle before the sun came up with so many overly bright lights I would be blinded for awhile after passing it. I always knew who was coming at me because the sky would be lit up like a sports stadium. Even the dash camera would not register where the road was. I went into the county police and showed the dash cam videos and got very little concern. I started using the right mirror to go further and further across the center until on day I met him without all the extra lights on.

Most new vehicles have an automatic on switch for headlights, if they are on during the day they may have turned them on in error, or it was dark enough they turned themselves on. Aiming on any headlights today seems suspect as they all seem to be all over the map. As an aside my '19 F150 has a setting that turns off the high beams switching on and off without me doing it, should be easy to find in the book.

and.. with some new vehicles you need an ap on your smartdevice to access the manual....
