OK, I just scored 6 cases of 10W40, 24 cans per case )
Shell SUPER multigrade motor oil one QUART(1.14l) cans !! These are the cardboard cans with steel ends
SO the 64,000$ question.... Anyone know how OLD they'd be ?
more important follow up...
Does anyone KNOW where my oilcan spout with piercer is ??

the addatives in oil tend to separate out after several years.... shake them up, or put in bucket and stir good prior to use.

What rating is the oil? (Sa-p) Oldest won't have a rating or a low rating, like Sa...)  |

I ain't seen one of those spouts in decades.  Good idea about mixing them up. I have seen those additives settle out on old oil.
So what you gonna do with it? Reminds me of the day when my dad would only pour Trop Arctic in his flat head Plymouth outta one of those spouts.

Dang had to get the bifocals on.... it says......API service SE (formerly MS )
So should be OK for the fleet of 1957 D-14s here ??
Wonder if it'd be 'ok' for lawn mowers and riders ??
I KNOW it's going into the A-C forklift with Buda BD153. It likes anything.
Crazy thing is the EMPTY cans are 'collectable' !! At $25 each.....

Turn the cans upside down for a month or so, then give it a good shake before opening.
I still have one old spout left, but in my teen years I just used a knife.

someone thought these'd be good for real 'hot rod', oil may have zinc in them ? I gotta find my real opener gizmo though, dang curious to see what's inside... it's Christmas again !!!
Too bad they don't say Allis-Chalmers on them though.....

Think there's still some Quaker State 20wt non detergent in metal quarts up in dad's shop. That's what he used after O/H to break things in. Been there since early 80's.

update...so.. SHELL gets back, asks me to look at the date code on the cans, I ask WHERE is that..... also says the additives are no good anymore.... I asked WHY ??

i always heard the additives are still there, just settled out in the bottom... After 40 years, i dont know, but after 10-15... you just stir them back up..
you said the cans are worth a fortune.. why not sell them WITH THE OIL and take the money to buy NEW oil ?

I found 2 old quart cans in some junk from an auction maybe 5 years ago. The Cardboard fell apart when I tried to open with church key. Open very carefully !! Be Good oil for use on open chains, or a GREEN tractor engine.

Some of the 10/40 oil was not designed for later model engines as they required over a 10 weight but the multi 40 was lacking something for late 80's engines , Yet if you have some older thins that had 10/40 spec - use it - it's batter than the $4.00 or more they now want for a quart .
Also it could be used for hydraulic oil in most equipment with no problem as 10/30 is spec on many hyd systems

gonna put ads out later.... seems guys poke 2 holes in the bottom to drain,probably real fast with a sharp awl.

Tossed out about a dozen of them last fall... just in my way. Ssome were like chromed and a couple were painted.

Maybe should use em to jam them in the butt of the plastic bottles so
to use in them hard to reach filler spouts that ford would bury below
the pipes and hoses in the engine compartment. Maybe not, prolly end up with a bigger mess.
