    Posted: 12 Dec 2010 at 7:49pm
Finally getting around to getting the wide front on my D17 series 4.   Got the narrow front off no problem.  Was putting the arm on the bottom of the steering bolster that the tie rods connect to.   When I bought this wide front, the guy that I got it from said there was a bad weld on the splined piece where it connected to the flat piece so before he painted it, he touched the weld up.  When I went to put it on tonite, I had the front wheels pointed straight ahead before I took the narrow front off.   When I went to put the wide front tie rod piece on, the pin hole in the middle on the bolster was pointing left/right almost perfectly 90 degrees to the tractor.   When I put the other piece on that the tie rods connect to, it was running on a 45 degree angle.   I turned the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right which is four revolutions, so when I come back to the center, which is two turns, the pin hole is at a perfect 90 to the tractor again.   Could the piece that the tie rods connect to have the splined piece rewelded in the wrong location?   If I am thinking correct, when the steering wheel is centered, the two holes where the tie rods connect to should be straight back towards the transmission, right?   I can take a picture of the piece when I get back tonite so everyone knows what I am talking about.   I just dont' want to cut the whole thing apart without verifying that I am doing the correct thing.   I will have to wireweld it by my dad's tomorrow night at the earliest anyways.  Thanks for any help.

Your right chuck. The bracket should be 90 degrees to the hole.

thanks for the picture Pat.   What's probably impossible to see once the front pivot piece and the wide front is installed is where your pin is in relationship to your wide front tube.   I think it should be parallel with the tube, but if you look at this picture, the hole is on an angle at about 45 degrees.    Looks like I got a bit of cutting and welding to do.

the pin & hole should be aligned widthwise with the tractor, not front to rear.  (think about how it has to be removed)

If the splined shaft isn't in mid-stroke when the pin/hole are in this position, then someone has had the internal gearing apart and probably got something out of time.

The splined shaft is in the correct position, it's the splined collar that is welded onto the bracket.   It looks like it must have been busted and was rewelded at one time.    It just wasn't rewelded in the proper location.   No big deal, I will just take an angle grinder and cut the welds on each side and then spin it to the proper place and reweld it.

Gatz is right about timing. It only applies to a P/S tractor though. It's really obvious what's involved in putting one together. What you're doing is setting it up so the hydraulic cylinder is in mid stroke when the wheels are straight ahead.
