Anyone here use the new to me home sheathing system or anything similar? Uses a green skinned sheathing and tape on the joint seams, no vapor barrier to install not sure if they even recommend adding vapor barrier.
Buddy of mine in OK has a new home going up with the system, stated even without siding or brickwork the structure with windows and doors was pretty well air tight, I was shocked at the efficiency of install and closure of his frame up. |

My take on it is that it is very expensive at $33.45 per sheet verses $13.90 per sheet (both 7/16") for regular OSB right now from our local Home Depot's website.
I know it doesn't need a vapor barrier and it stands up to weather better that standard OSB, but at more than twice the price, I would think you can install a vapor barrier and cover it with siding for around the same money. it has to have siding over it eventually.

New neighbour used it, regrets ever buying it and having it installed. First it's very expensive compared to 'traditional' sheathing. Their joint tape is $$$$. Second it HAS to be installed according to the instructions, even need their roller to put their $$$ tape on. If you're thinking about it, price it out and READ the PITA instructions.... from either install or energy savings ,it is NOT any better. I KNOW it's a HUGE sore spot ,regrets ever being con-vinced to using it and I NEVER bring it up.

We have used it with homeowners recommendation.
Very expensive. We do use the zip tape a lot. I much prefer it to window tape. $75.00 a roll last I saw. Might be less now. I just delivered a case of it to a job this week. |

I have. The stuff is awesome. Knocked our electric bill in half.
Unbelievable for no more than what it is. The tape is the same way. Expensive but there isn't a better tape made. I bought 15 sheets pre-covid for $18-$20 each 4x8 to try it out from Lowes. Got that up and got online to order some more and it said they had 80 some sheets for $1.99 each but you had to buy all of them. Ended up getting 60 or so of them. All they had. I still have 20 or so left.

In our climate, anything I would ever build that would ever have heat source in it would be spray-foamed, which in itself is a vapor barrier, so the allure of the zip system lessens.

3 3/4" x 90' roll of Zip tape is $31.68 here, so quite a bit cheaper here (but still expensive!) 3-3/4 in. x 90 ft. ZIP System Tape 5017100 (homedepot.com) |

Just a thought, but if the green coating is the vapor barrier, wouldn't every nail or screw that penetrates that membrane need to be taped to have a true vapor barrier?

Regular vapor barrier gets a plastic capped nail to retain and spread stress zone, builder on our house used that system, 6 of one half dozen other. Also as I read on, there is a sealant the builder is supposed to apply to nail heads much as the tape or apply tape. More I read on it the less I am sold on it now. More a Step and Time saver for builder at increase expense on materials, most builders base against sq footage in a flat rate unit price rather than a per hour as on a custom build where if building more units faster earn more cash. Another 'Trend' perhaps?

I'm seeing more and more of the ZIP systems going on new homes in my area.
