Help!! I bought a d-17 series 4 around 4 years ago. After a year of service the governor decided to let go. I tore down the engine and retrieved all pieces and replaced them with wd-45 weights which worked for about 2 years then let go yesterday during a hay ride  I retrieved most of the parts still up in the front cavity. Is this a problem that the d-17's have once and a while. Is there anything out there that can replace this outside of the engine (maybe electrical) with a crank sensor or something?

I am having trouble figuring out why you would put in WD45 governor weights? If they only lasted 2 years, I can only assume that they were used to begin with. If so, you have no right to complain about them failing.
New ones are available from AGCO and I would replace the pins too as they can accelerate wear as well.
You are dealing with 50 year old mechanical stuff. If you think you can put modern sensors on and have it work properly, go ahead and try - you would probably be the first.

Governor weights and pins for a WC-WD-WD45 and D-17 are all the same. Governor weight explosions are generally considered to be from worn weights and pins and loose/worn/rough timing gears. If you replaced failed parts with used parts, that was probably a bad idea. Any timing gear that has even ONE rough tooth can cause excessive shaking of the governor weights as they spin, which will eventually lead to failure.

Scott... Dr is telling you that YES, it is a known problem after 50- 60 years.. You dont want to put in USED parts.. Put in NEW and good for another 50 years... It was a mistake to put in USED WD45 parts ..

Any front gear with a rough tooth will destroy Governor weights. MACK

Thanks guys for the help on this. I did replace the weight pins and did check for wear on the used wd-45 weights which had a nice slip fit however I have learned my lesson so I will buy new parts to replace. I did notice that both times that I had the problem one of the pins fell out. I am buying new timing gears and governor gear to too try to solve this problem. I also noticed that the camshaft thrust "button" and screw on the timing gear cover were worn so I bought them as well. I need to remove the oil pan again and retrieve the parts there and clean the oil pick-up screen. Has anyone on here removed the crankshaft timing gear with it still in the engine? I have removed the camshaft gear with no problem.
