 Topic: Anyone seen one of these,,,,?

I was in town last Saturday and drove by a big yard sale that had that "MAGIC " word,,,TOOLS,,so pulled in and there were lots of toolsbut prices were a tad too high. Altho, I did but this tool because my Dad used to have one and I put many a mile grinding valves on the one he had,,,,  This one works very well and was obviously well taken care of. The shaft turns about half way, then reverses about same distance and gears inside are nice and firm. What is missing on this one is the rubber suction cuo thay grabs onto the valve and I looked on Ebay and amazon but aib't found one or a supplier for one, Does anybody know where I might find one,,,?

You may have to buy an inexpensive one and modify the suction cup to work on your lucky find.

Joe, think of Wal Mart and others that sell them little buggers that stick to mirrors, shower stalls, walls.... i bet one of them would ADAPT to that end rod.....search "rubber suction cup"

I've got a couple of those. Very good for lapping in valves. Mine have several different adapters including suction cups for different style valve heads.

Hey Phil,,whst luck,,! Does your tool have a brand name on it? This one is of high quality steel with really close dems but nary a name or any writing on it,,can't believe it from china,,?? I was gonna take the end cap off to look inside but will have to remove the hand crank to get a look inside,and rather not take apart,,,yet.

Many valves in older engines had 2 holes in them that mated to a 2 point prong of the valve lapper, Before good rubber was available for suction cups.

Here are some pics, Joe This is the one I use the most. It has several valve driver tips that can be used. It is marked Zim Manufacturing Co., Chicago.

Here are both of the ones I have. The shorter one has no markings of any kind on it. There are some of the driver tips that I have for them. Smaller one has the tip for lapping Twin City tractor valves.

HEy THANKS Phil,,that one does look like mine, SO I googles ZiM Mfg co and there is a website but also says compant "Permanently Closed" But,,,But thas OK as Looking at what ole Steve and Hubert posted gave ne a great idea.,,,,,INSTEAD of trying to match a 50 year old tool,,I think I'll order what Steve and Hubert suggested and just cut the end off and machine an "ADAPTER" to marry the end of the grinder to the new end of the wooden hand grinder which has 4 or 5 different size rubber suction cups,,,,,, (I was just lookin for an excuse to use my lathe)  What ya'll think bout that?? 
Something else,,,this one looks like new,,but NO NAME,,,,?? I didn't think china had been copyin our stuff way back then,,,,???

ALBERTSON manufactured a lot of them and sold to "others" with their name stamped into the crank handle.

Hey Many Thanks,,, Steve!! I am really impressed with the machining quality of this one as the fit between the cover and the body is so close and the metal is of very high quality. I polished the body to an almost chrome look,,,, Hard to believe the 1917 patent date,,,,!! I don't really see the benefit of such a long shaft, Do you? The shaft on this one is 8" long and I noticed that one of the ones ole Phil has is a short and also a long shaft one. I kinda like a short shaft bout 4" for more stability while grinding,,,,,,?

The long shafts were for grinding valves in headless engines. Back when these things were made, some engines had the head and block cast as one piece. The valves were recessed down in valve ports located in the top of the block in the combustion chamber. The ports were closed off with brass plugs that screwed into the block with sealing washers.
Also, some engines with overhead cams were also headless and you had to access the valves from the bottom of the cylinder bore! On most of these types of engines, the block casting is a separate unit and is bolted on to the crankcase. I have to work on these types of engines sometimes.   Here are a couple of pics of a headless design from a 1923 Fiat I did for a customer.

Very interesting Phil,,I guess I've been lucky to not ever had to work on one of them,,,, That would be a bear to grind the valves like that, I wen ahead and ordered the wooden ones like ole Steve and Hubert linked, then machine an adapter to marry the shaft to the wood after I decide how long to cut the wood shafts, Many Thanks for all your help,,,!!!

Joe, you might just eliminate the wood stick.. Turn a small adapter on the lathe with a small knob on the end that looks like the end of the wood stick, and just PUSH the rubber cup over the knob..... other end just slips into the groove of your grinder shaft and retain with a pin or cotter.
