Hi. I have a chance to buy a WD wide front and was wondering about putting 6 bolt hubs on it. Any thoughts on what would replace the standard 5 bolt hubs? Thanks, Charlie |

Maybe a set of hubs off an All Crop combine? Read this older post.

The All-Crop didn't use tapered roller bearings, did they? I don't suppose later six bolts would work?

The six bolt off of a model 100 will work but you would have to find a junked one. Not many 100 series left in the all crops.

So what I have learned here is that the hubs off of a WC will work on a WD, correct?

David, The 5-bolt hub from the WC thru the series III D-17 are the same.
I have been trying to determine from studying the parts manual whrther or not the 6 bolt hub from a series IV D-17 will fit on the earlier tractors.
1. The part # for the NFE spindle ass'y. on D-17s is the same thru series IV.
2. The spindle for the series IV D-17 WFE has a different part no. than the earlier ones.
3. The outer bearing and cone is the same thru series IV.
4 The inner bearing and cone for the series IV have different numbers than the earlier ones.
Based on #1, would the 6-bolt hub fit the earlier tractor? I would GUESS so if the correct inner bearing and come were used. I bet some of the guys here have tried this?
Does any of this help to answer the question? Probably not. LOL

Tapered roller bearings are made in families with common cone and roller dimensions but sometimes a range of cone bores, cup outside diameters, and widths. Within the family you can use any cup and any cone. A good bearing shop should have a listing that way, I know the big printed catalog from Baum Hydraulics is arranged that way, but I don't know which box my latest one is in. But you need Timken numbers to play that shuffle. Sometimes the odd bearings in the family are very expensive as if very few are made.

The D-17 narrow front stayed with 5 bolt hubs it's entire life. When I rebuilt the one on my Series IV, I changed it over to 6 bolt hubs (same ones used on late series IV's and 170/180/185 tractors). My parts man (Jim IA) was able to get me the right combination of tapered roller bearings to get the job done. I did have to get a different sleeve made for the interior of the spindle where the seal rides as I wanted to use the more modern triple-lip rubber seal instead of the original style felt one.
So... YES it can be done, and all with parts from your AGCO dealer. Not to say that the WD spindle will hold up under increased load?

What is your reason to go to a 6 bolt hub, to go with different front wheels, or are you putting a loader on it?

Russ is right. Dad put 6 bolt hubs on his series 1 D17 rears ago. Just had to get the right bearings. He had trouble breaking the centers out of the 5 hole wheels.

The reason for considering this, is so that I can put on a set of taller front tires that I have on hand, to offset the height of the back. It has some 23.1's on now. This WD is just my toy tractor, which I am just getting back to, since summer is over. I set a 17 engine in it, just about to fire it up, finally! One difficult thing, which wan't all that difficult, was making a spacer for between the water pump and block, so pulleys would line up correctly, got it done Friday, though it took some whittling, lol.

You should be able to buy stronger 5 bolt wheel centers as another simpler alternative. You have to look at the wheel rating, if you buy only on price you will get a wimpy wheel center.

Thanks for all the thoughts, I really appreciate them. I need to round up one of those bearing books!

I am not sure your spacer on the waterpump, is the right thing to do. it will hit the radiator? I have been told you have to re-do the hole in the crank pully so it slides back farther to line up with the waterpump.

What about the 6 bolts hubs from a WC? I believe they had the same size spindles.

WC's will work on WD's we've done it but I have all crop 90 hubs tried it and the allcrop hubs are way short for the spindal plus bearings are different and UC hubs won't work their spindal is way bigger than WD at least one with spokes is wich I assume is the same no matter what was on there. I personaly think the 6 bolt makes it appear more heavyduty and for us a better selection of rims and tires. They should have all had 6 bolt hubs.

I agree, Good! Six bolt hubs would open up so many more possibilities.

Matt, I wasn't sure either, but put it all together last night, and it went well. Just needed a 3/8 inch spacer plate to get things in line. The front pulley needed to be machined to fit the larger diameter crank, but really lucked out there. Found one that had already had been machined, just laying out at the local salvage yard!
