A friend of mines dad is looking for a tractor in the 30-45hp range. He wants something to plow a garden and push snow. He would like something newer with 3pt. Does anybody have an opinion on what would make him a good tractor? What kind of price range? I know it will depend on options and condition of the tractor.

A good condition D14 with a Cross aftermarket 3PTH would have him smiling. They are out there.

I've used a Kioti a lot been good tractor. Don't know where you are at but there is a dealer here local and he use to the volume dealer in the nation and has sent many tractors as far as California cause of his good deals.

What does he consider a garden? Most of the new compact utility tractors are great for loader work, moving snow, mowing ect but the 3 points on them have lousy draft control, typically have industrial type tires with lousy traction, and the 3 point plows are typically lousy all the way around. A snap coupler plow is a dream compared to them on something like a D14, then on top of it all you have another car payment with a new compact tractor.
Price, somewhere between 1500 on the low end to 20000 for a new 30 hp compact with some options. Some where in the middle you might look for a JD 2020 or 2510/ AC 160/ IH 574 or something of that nature. What ever he does pick, get one with good dealer support. A good deal turns very sour if you don't have a good stable dealer that really cares nearby. If I was buying something newer that I really had to depend on for income, it would be a John Deere, not because their tractors are so much better, but it 5 miles down the road, they have the best parts department of any dealer I have seen so far, and will bend over backwards to help if I am spending 2.50 on bolts or 25000 on a new compact tractor. |

You have to consider parts availability, on what you are buying. Also you need live hyd.The only old AC I would recommend is a D10 or D12 series three, with three point. A word of good advice, no matter what brand you look at call a dealer and ask for parts and see what they have to say.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking something like a smaller Ford maybe 3600, 4000??? more along the lines of a mid 80s to mid 90s. Something that doesnt cost an arm and a leg maybe the 2k to 10k range. I havent got alot of details on what he wants, I dont think hes real sure either. We are going to an auction Friday to give him a chance to look and see what he likes and what he doesnt. I dont have much experience with the newer smaller tractors, mine experence is either older or bigger because ive never had a need for one. For the most part parts wont be a problem theres a JD, 2 IH, 3NH and an AC/MF/NH dealer with in about 35 minutes, all have good parts departments. His garden was plowed with my D19 and 2 bottom plow and it took about 20 mins adjusting the plow and all, so its not real big maybe 20x30??? |
