i bought a new fuel shutoff and strainer. the shutoff casting hole is larger than the strainer and the directions say to "shim" it to keep it tight.......
can i use JB Weld gas tank seal putty to attach the strainer?
should I use aluminum foil to keep it tight?
i thought about tapping the casting but it apears to be made of pot metal so I dont know how easy that would crack,.

What tractor? If its a D series or earlier, I always just reamed out the strainer, a little...

On all the AC's that I have worked on, the OEM fuel strainer was a disc, that went up on the top of the fuel outlet, inside the fuel bowl...

That looks like a sediment bowl/strainer for a garden tractor.

My min-mo u has the same thing on it and I also have a nos one in my fuel supply cabinet if I think of it the next time I'm in the shop I'll get a picture of it

that looks like a band-aid fix for a dirty fuel tank and will defeat the purpose of the sediment bowl to collect debris and allow it to be removed. Doesn't your sediment bowl have a cleanable/removeable screen above the bowl? It should have. That standpipe looks like it would also not allow collected/condensed water to drain into the sediment bowl to be drained off, and would cause the fuel tank to rust out in time. I would never use something like that.

Here a couple of pictures of the strainer, and yes it has a removable screen on top of the glass bulb and it does let the water get out into the glass bulb.

Personally, I would not use JB Weld or anything else that would attach the strainer screen permanently. I would prefer to have it just pressed in. I would try teflon thread tape first. If that isn't thick enough, I have used strips cut from the sides of a soda can for shims. I suppose aluminum foil would work, but it isn't very thick.
I have used this screen above the sediment bowl setup on old tractors with pretty good luck, if the tank isn't real bad. It works well to catch stuff that would eventually plug the inlet. I am assuming that stuff falls harmlessly to the bottom of the tank when the tractor is shut off.

I agree. Throw that stand pipe away. Keep your gas tank clean and you won't have any problems. The sediment bowl is all you need. I run sediment bowls on all of my tractors and have not had any problems. Keep the tanks clean, use good clean fuel and you are good to go.

when i got my 190 I had lots of trouble with dirt and water in the fuel. I drained the tank and remove the fuel sediment bulb assembly from the tank got another 4 gallons of fuel out of it it had a stand pipe added to the valve 3 of the additional gallons were dirty water. after removing both valves and cleaning the tank out replacied them with new valves I got from TSC so their not the greatest and putting in new fuel I havent had problemssince now when I remove the sediment bowl im actually getting the water from the bottom of the tank. the cheesy screens from TSC are ok but Ive put aircraft fuel strainer screens in most of my tractors they just happen to be the same size but the screen is part if the bowl gasket. the older Allis screens had a metal edge binding that kept them in place in the bowl.
