Was driving my D17 on the road the other day and the engine revved to about 500 RPMs above normal. Now, sitting still,at half throttle, engine is running at full speed. My dad thinks it is the governor. Any input would be appreciated before we tear it apart.
Thank you |

Should be able to remove cover at front of governor and peek in at weights. Don't have to tear whole front off to have a look.

You may be lucky and have only broken one governor weight and not damaged anything else, YET. DO NOT start it or crank it over !!! Remove distributer cap, mark exactly where the rotor tail is pointed and pull out the governor/.distributer all in one piece. Once repaired reassemble making sure the rotor tail is EXACTLY pointed where it was before and you're good-to-go.

Replacing pins and weights is at lot simpler and less costly than having an engine throw a rod when it takes off.

Thanks. Will push it in the garage and get it fixed. And I'll tell my dad he was right.

The Dr. and others have mentioned several times to change the governor weights and pins as a PM. Is there any indication or typical hours to indicate when the engine should have the governor serviced? My D17 IV had the engine rebuilt at ~ 3,000hrs at an AC dealership with a top notch mechanic, and it still runs like a top 20 years later with only an additional 1,000 hrs. However, I have no idea if they would have replaced the weights as a matter of course. Now I am wondering if I shouldn't dig into it just to be safe. Any guidance on when to PM the governor or any warning signs of impending failure?

Governor weights work just fine until they break/explode.

I just put a D17 on the shelf because of this. Weights came off, took out the governor gear, broke several teeth on the camshaft, and bent some teeth on the crankshaft.
