What was the internal difference in the Koehler 301 engines in the 700 series garden tractors to get the 10,12,14 and 16 hp ratings.

My 712S I bought new as a kid mowings yards was rebuilt back in the 1980’s and it’s plum tired. If it’s simply a matter of a different piston or maybe boring it out to a larger piston size I’m thinking I’d like to make it a 16 hp engine.

Also where is the best place to get the parts? I’d like to get a new standard crank and make it brand new on the inside. Thanks michael

Unfortunately its not that simple. I believe the blocks are different thicknesses. Each has the model cast into the front of the block. Some of the K241 (10hp) engines used a K301 block, which meant it had a thicker cylinder wall. Other than that each model had its own specific block. The counterweights are smaller on the K301 crankshaft compared to the K321/K341.

Have 2 - K341 engines as cores as I replaced engines with Honda V 18 HP in my New Holland S16  tractors . One has been rebuilt once before - other had balance gear break and it took dipper off rod cap .  Somewhere I also have a Tecumseh 16 HP- OHV with bad rod that I used in the S16 for 5 years.
Bought a Ariens tractor with a K341 - 16 HP with a bad base gasket for $300 with snow blower and 54" mower deck .

Thanks for the information guys. I really appreciate it. I was hoping I could just bore it out but I see that’s not the case. Coke I sent you an email. If either of your 341 blocks are rebuildable I’d be interested. Michael

At one point in time you could bore at 12 horse to a 14 .030 spec If you could get the piston. The 12 horse and the 14 horse have the crankshaft. The 10 though the 14 are all the same block but the 10 horse has a smaller crank then both the 12 and 14.

Those old K341 blocks are getting tough to find. My nephew needed a block for his 716H and found a good rebuildable block out of a Wheel Horse Tractor. Had to make a small change on somthin' but I don't recall what it was that needed to change. Wasn't a biggy that's fir' sure..... Kirk engines has a lot of Kohler information and cool stuff.

12, 14, 16 all use the same rod -
Wheel Horse built their tractor so oil pan was part of tractor and block mounted to it . I have a 12 in a wheel horse out back that i got a few years back - ran but smoked , might have a couple starter motors for those engines also as I went through a couple

Still have those Kohler K341 engines if anyone want's to go bigger on their machines .
Neighbor just had to buy a head for his MF tractor with a K341 - cost him $120 for the head alone as his stripped the spark plug hole and helicoil he had put in stripped out also so could not do it a 2nd time .

Try Isavetractors.
I’ve got 3 overhaul kits from them and really like them.
I’ve got a John Deere 214 that I have at .020 over piston, a .010 under rod, and had the head shaved. I have a 46” deck on it and it don’t even know it on in 8” grass ( the deck is set for 2.75”).
