My Grandson starts Trap Club this week and we are having a hard time finding shells. I have enough to last a few weeks but not enough for the full season. Does anybody know of a source to purchase these? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. rrhead(SD)

First of all,,,Welcome to the group,,,, ![]() ![]() secondly,,I'm assuming you are talking about centerfire bullets,,,? What caliber of gun will he be shooting? AS you have already found out,,most all ammo has beenvery hard to find and when you do it now costs prolly 3-4 times what it used to cost a year ago,,,!! You best shot (no pun intended) will be to take up reloading to make sure your son has the best load available for accuracy and prolly help him do better shooting Good Luck,,,,Keep us informed,,,,

When you say TRAP i think of 12 gauge shells.. I assume 12 gauge is available around you, but your looking for a smaller SHOT size ? ......... or maybe he is using a 20 gauge ?

THE CRITERIAFor our purposes, we are considering 12 gauge, 2-3/4”shells within velocities legal for ATA Trap, in the spirit of following competition shooting rules. Shot size of 7-1/2 or 8 is standard and left up to personal preference, while 1-1/8 ounces of shot is most common, though the recoil-sensitive will likely prefer 1 ounce loads. For what it’s worth, I’ve seen plenty of 25’s and 50’s shot from lesser distances with one ounce shells. |

Speaking of shot gun shells.
I have a 12 ga. that the side of the brass is split. It's a new, never been reloaded, old shell. What do I do with it? Do I dare shoot it? Dusty

Dusty I would not shoot it! Take a knife and cut the plastic off and dump the powder and shot out. The primer you can push out from the brass. Don't use the primer it could be deformed from the pushing.

Thanks, What would happen if after removing the power and shot if I were to shoot the primer? Just to get rid of it. Dusty

Thank you for the responses. He is using my 12 gauge this year. We went to Scheels and Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday and did see allot of game load (2,4, and 6 shot) but nothing for 7.5 or 8 oz. I will try the link above and see what they have.

You can pull the wad and shot and dump the powder. Then fire the primer in your gun. Should make loud pop! Inspect the gun to make sure nothing is lodged in the barrel.

You’re gonna have to hit Walmart the local farm stores the LGS (local gun stores) and those that you already mentioned. You’ll have to make your rounds often. Also keep a good eye on all the online dealers. Anytime you see a bulk deal jump on it. |

Check with the trap club he is shooting at. Sometimes they have shells available. I would shy away from reloads unless I reloaded them myself. Good luck to him.

If you want to start shooting trap, advise to buy a reloader soon. 16-20 yard trap 1oz 8’s, light loads are fine. On the 27 yard line 1 1/8 oz, 7 1/2’s recommended. Your son will want consistent loads to be successful as he does better. This will be hard to do buying cheap ammo when available. Winchester AA’s load nice as well some others.

How does buying ammo this way work? Can they ship it to the buyer or do they have to ship it to a store and the buyer picks it up there? |

I shot trap for years. I shot 8 and 8 1/2 shot. 1 oz is fine if you are on them. I liked doubles the best. Tracy

When I shot trap the ranges had their own shells required to purchase as were loads safe for that range here and in ID, OK or UT. All handloads, preferred to buy their own casings(Low Brass) and use environmentally degradable wads in at least two of them.

Thank you all for the excellent responses. Grandson and I talked about it over the weekend and have decided to try reloading. He is willing to try it with my help and if he gets good at it, he can do it for a long time. Bought re loader on the internet last night. Are the primers, wads, and powder hard to get now? Hope we don't have a problem with that too. Thanks again

You will have trouble as long as this administration is in office. Primers are 3x the cost they should be and hard to find. I would advise to work up a nice soft shooting 1oz load. There are several choices of powder, some are fast, some are slower burning. They all have characteristics that benefit a situation. Some of our older LC Smith’s seem to do well with Green-Dot, my more modern backbored guns seem to like faster powder for light loads. There will be a lot of enjoyment in just reloading and watching him shoot! Start collecting hulls! Best of Luck, Kevin

Best advice on reloading is get with someone that is good at. I learned from someone that was a big trap shooter. He let me use his loader and I brought my own components. It's not something you want to just try doing without experience. Talk to the trap club and go from there. I'm sure there is someone that will help. And like was mentioned AA's were good hulls to reload.

Once you let him give a go at Trap, make sure you go do Sporting Clays. Little better for meeting new folks once on the course and a lot more relaxing! Helps build shooting skills (different from trap) more aligned to field applications. A little more suitable for family & friends to get together.

I can’t speak for shotgun primers but rifle and pistol primers are the hardest thing to find in the shooting world and way overpriced if you do happen on to some.
$32.00 rifle primers are bringing between $200 and 300.00. That said, in the future this will pay off and for me is just about as fun as the actual shooting. |

If you shoot much and reload, you will want a progressive loader. There are several on the market. I have a mec grabber hydraulic loader. I bought it used from a older trap shooter. I shot Red Dot a while it is dirty. I like Solo 1000 the best, very clean. I used to buy all the once fired hulls I could get. I like the Winchester AA and Remingtons the best. Load them till they won't stay together no more! Good Luck!

I have been to the Fleet Farm store in Sioux Falls several times in the last month and no trap load shells. They do have some game load in stock at high prices for a box. Scheels did say they get some in occasionally but sell out in a couple of hours. Thanks for all the responses. rrhead(SD)
