Why is it that it's the finger tip that needs "pricked" to get a sample ?? Is there no other place to get the sample ??

Probably could get a sample out of any of the toes and possible the third leg, although that could be a little painful possibly.

Easiest place to sanitize to prevent bacterial infection. All that is needed for a sample is a drop of blood to test glucose level.

i take my samples from the pad of any finger. all the nurses that try to do it always chose the sides of any fingers.

I've always used fingertips because that's what I was told to start with. I've also heard of people using samples from their arms. I really think klinemar hurry the nail on the head as to why they say use fingertips though

I just recently asked a nurse why they seem to always use the side of the finger. Her reply was the skin is much softer and easier to pierce rather than the tough skin at the end of the finger. I believe she also mentioned that the side pierce would heal quicker. |

Also, there's more blood closer to the surface in your fingers. A tiny little pick in the arm might or might not even yield a drop of blood.

I have used my toes but seems a little less blood comes and so i switch fingers and hands so it is not always 'in the same place'. I only do once a day first thing so not a big deal at this point. of course I am watching what I eat so as to maintain low numbers ... with the help of one pill.

If you have a little extra weight you can pinch a roll on your side and do it there.

Klinemar is correct - easiest place to sanitize and stick. Don't use the first drop for the sample since any unevaporated alcohol will dilute it, wipe it off with a dry 2x2 and get a second drop. A 14 ga IV catheter will get you a good sample also.

anyone seen anyone using those new fangled 'prickless' devices ? The one glued to your arm that send data to the entire friggin World ?? I can't se them being fun to have on 24/7, likely to get caught moving stuff, walking into walls, etc.

I have an insulin pump and have a sensor that communicates with the pump like Jay is talking about. Yes they get caught on everything and are very aggravating sometimes. I've caught both my sensor and my pump port on things before and pulled them completely out. Doesn't feel very good.

I am glad I had a CDL when I was found to have dibetes and my doctor kept me on pills instead of insulin I don't have to do that daily testing

I've been seeing the commercials recently, but doesn't that device need to have "probes" into the skin to register glucose levels ??

Blood is taken from the fingertip because the capillaries are closest to the top layer of skin. That simplifies the sampling process. It would be much more painful and difficult if you were to draw blood from, for example, your ankle. I was very unlucky because, in addition to diabetes, I also have hypertension. So I have to have my blood sugar checked and my blood pressure measured at all times. At first, I was apprehensive, but now I am entirely used to this way of life. That is not a reason for me to get upset. On the contrary, it is a mighty push that makes me move forward. Many thanks to functional medicine. If it weren't for the proper treatment for hypertension, I would have treated my disease differently.

I use one. I don't have much issue with it catching on things or running into walls. (Maybe I don't drink as much as others.) The one thing I've found is that sweating will make the "adhesive" lose it's stickiness quicker.

I use the free style arm tester. you just have to prick yourself once every 2 weeks in the finger, to get a baseline test. this 2 weeks my electric reader was 6 points high. so every reading i have to record is 6 points less then reader reads. this came from calling free style. $68 for 28days worth of tests, from sam's club. i oay cash as my medicare won't pay.

My A1C jumped to 8.8 this year when I had to change doctors cause mine retired, they put me on Jardiance and I was have dry mouth and leg cramps at night, it was taking to much water out of my body. Now that I am on insulin I have none of them problems and my sugar test are dropping.

I'm lucky my A1C has been real steady for 4+ years stays 6.8 to 7 when I go to Dr every 90 days, so I've gotten so only poke a finger every couple days. Doing it 3 times daily didn't matter tip, side or pad fingers were sore all the time, especially when handling tools 7 hrs a day. I know a lot of us can't get the blood sugars to stay steady, my parents and brother's jumped all over no matter how they tried.

Been on insulin since 1968. Could only home test for sugar in your urine back then until they came out with the glucose meter. I test multiple times a day and A1C stays at 6.0 or lower. It's a learning process to juggle food, exercise and dosage and has taken years of practice. Not a bit fun but is double.
