Is it just a "here" thing, or is it more regional ? I'm asking about the lack of the product in this area. A builder was just saying yesterday that the local independent lumber yards (Big C) was having trouble sourcing materials. I didn't give it much thought until today when a customer of mine went to the nearest Menards to order the decking materials for his re-decking project and get the 11% deal(ends tomorrow). He texted me and said the project is on hold because Menards is out of decking boards, don't know when anymore is coming in and won't take any prepaid orders for it until further notice

Same deal here. Hard to find decking boards. Maybe everybody decided to build a deck while they're stuck at home

Was going to buy the grandson a 24 inch bike last week... NOPE-- sold out at Wal Mart.. Maybe 6 weeks wait...... you can buy 12 or 16 inch, but no 24 or 26 !

Part of the Virus response, more are home pay is still coming expenses decreased so repairs and improvements went crazy. Lumber yard here in town cannot keep enough materials on hand, spread that across 48 states and the lumber suppliers cannot deliver fast enough. Truss builder just at Owensville 6 to 9 weeks out for orders not for lack of material but of time to cover the orders.

Just had a long wait on some PT dog ear fence pickets. I went to pick them up yesterday afternoon and noticed that it looked like a big load of OT material was just received at the lumber yard.
I hope this isn’t going to be an ongoing problem. |

Had one guy at church saying that he could not find PT 4x4's to do some repairs on rental property. I bought a few 2x6/12 from a local farm store a number of weeks back for around $9 each, went back 3 weeks ago for some more and they had jumped to around $13. Much better quality and service than I can get at Lowe's or HD though. It should all level out in the next few months.

The guy I'm talking to to build me a deck says there is no 5/4 stock. It is being caused by covid. The shortage has caused any you can find to be 3 to 4 times more than regular price. He said he couldn't get to my deck until August so the shortage may be gone by then. Otherwise I'm gonna have to use plastic boards. He's doing the neighbors out in the plastic so I guess I'll haveta get nosy and go see how thiers is looking.

Just remember the plastic doesn’t span as far as yellow pine/pt so more joists and different screws. Also very hot on bare feet. Otherwise I like the synthetic deck boards. |

Is the "plastic" the same as composite decking? 20 years ago there was some true plastic on the market "here", but it didn't stay around long ![]() ![]() Have a HAPPY FATHERS DAY guys

Happy Fathers day!
I am in wait mode on trusses and the wont be delivered till the rest of the framing materials like pressure treated poles are available which I have not checked on but will check Monday. I plan to use the engineered poles PT laminated bottoms, and finger joint std pine above. They say they are very true and stable. But they are slightly smaller than std 6x6's. I have waited many years to build a building, so I will try to be patient and wait this shortage out. Dont have much choice. Talked to the builder and he has a plan to build the walls with out the bottom skirt boards and then add them later. Regards, Chris |

Pressure treated lumber is in short supply in northern NY state. The owner of our local lumber yard told me they were doing about double of what there business plan is. They are taking orders for PT as it comes in, but they can't guarantee a date.

Miller is right. The number of home projects is up significantly due to the lockdown. Our city has processed a huge number of permits for decks, fences and basement finishes. People are bored and getting to those projects they've been putting off. I would venture a guess COVID has also affected the plants that produce these materials that are in short supply just like it did the meat plants

John,
We have a deck that is not wood, probably composite. We moved here in late 2012, and it had been built a few years before before we moved here. If you wood like you may come and take a look at it. Dusty

Thanks Dusty! I have seen the composite(plastic) and think it looks very nice, but the price is pretty steep for that stuff. I figure I won't be living here for too much longer so I was trying to go the cheaper route. I did really like the no screw look of the composite. We are retired so I guess we aren't in any hurry to get this done!
